Marlin 336 Questions
I have come across a used 336 in 30/30 that I'm thinking about using for my project gun. The wood is un- checkered, it has the Connecticut roll markings on the barrel. My question is did Marlin build the later guns with the cross bolt safety? The gun is really clean no brassing on the gate, no scratches, no rub marks. QD sling swivel bases and a white line recoil pad. It will be a bit over $350 out the door at my range/gun shop.
I'm thinking it would turn into a 38-55 very nicely.

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
I think marlin started the cross bolt safety in 1983.
I picked up a 2003 JM a few years back, it was beat up a bit.
I paid $350 out the door.
Rear sight was missing, wood covered in dents and dings, receiver bluing was missing, etc.
I turned it into a marauder, had it cut down to 16.25", cerakoted, steamed out the dents, etc.
Got it home and installed a wild west trigger, saddle ring safety delete, and bought a folding rear sight.

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
Mine is uncheckered and in good shape, no safety. It's old. Mine has no swivels but has a bullseye. I paid more LOL.

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
Well, I went and did it. The Marlin now sits in my safe until funds build back up for the rebore job to 38-55. I ran a box of 30/30 Federals through it to check function etc. Smooth and accurate on my indoor 25 yard range that i belong to. Discovered it also has the desire JM marking on the barrel. Picture(s0 first chance i get.

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
Excellent.
Good job getting it secured.
38-55 will be a good way to go.
any idea on long range sights?
I have a few folding ladder rear sights, but am looking at a marbles tang sight right now

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
I have a Marbles' improve tang sight on my 45 Colt '92 and will eventually put one on the 357. So I'm leaning that way for the 38-55 also. Right now it's just a few bucks difference between the improve and the traditional. Grew to like tang sights with my Sharps, they suit my eyes and for the ranges for Ohio deer they work fine.
Checked the SN and it was built in '83 and based on condition must have spent most of its life in the safe.

Re: Marlin 336 Questions
I think you'll like it. I went with the improved on my 20" octagonal 45 Colt with the standard shaft and it works okay with the stock front sight. That will eventually become a Lyman 17A. I also want to add a couple more disks to the set, slightly large aperture for dense woods and early and late light. May investigate the Merit adjustable.
