RP63 revolver bad rossi service

Post by RedHead »

I purchased a New Rossi RP63 revolver from Buds Gun shop. Unfortunately my 80 year old fingers could not pull the trigger or the hammer back. It was extremely hard to do and I had to use both hands in order to cock the hammer back. I Emailed Rossi and they said to dry fire it and it will become easier. After 250-300 dry fires it did ease up a bit, but is still difficult to pull the trigger or the hammer back. I decided to disassemble the gun and clean it and oil the parts in the hope that it will become a little more easier to shoot. Note that I'm a mechanical engineer and have taken at least 100 or more S&W and Ruger revolvers apart completely with no problems. So I went to remove the main spring assy and I foolishly removed the pin holding the main spring and the spring flew away. I looked all over my garage and could not find it. So, I emailed Rossi and requested they send me another main spring and I said I will pay for it and shipping. They replied that the spring was restricted and could not send or sell me one. I replied "restricted" for what? It's only a spring. I replied that the gun is USLESS without the spring and I haven't even shot it once since I got it from Buds. I asked if Rossi would buy the gun back and they replied that since I didn't buy it from Rossi they won't buy it back. Now this leaves me with a hunk of USLESS steel that I paid $400 for and cannot sell it without the spring either.
What lousy customer service from Rossi. I will never buy anything from Rossi (or their parent company Taurus) since they have such lousy customer service.

Okay, you might try ordering hammer spring from Wolff Gun springs website for a Taurus 85.

Or, you might order from Wolff hammer springs for a med./Lg. frame Taurus 65,66 and trim to a shorter length approximating the original spring length ( swag, right ?)

I wouldn't take it back either since it was disassembled and missing parts. I might send you a spring but Rossi is known for hoarding their own parts. Just get another spring.

I would like to get an original spring from Rossi, but since they wont send me one I'll try Wolf as recommended by Arroyoshark. I checked all my hundreds of S&W parts and I don't have a spring anything near the original.
By the way GasGuzzler, I have taken hundreds of revolvers completely apart and had no problems, even fixed a few that were broken.

Just ordered 2 kits from WOLF in the hope that there will be one spring that I can use.

I posted in another topic after you but my old Rossi .38 was obviously copied from an S&W 36. If the new ones still are, maybe a mainspring for a 36 would work.

Thanks Gas Guzzler, I'll try the wolf springs that I already ordered and if they won't fit I'll give the Smith 36 main spring a try.

I received the spring order that I placed with Wolf and one of the springs is very close to the same size of the original. They are for a Taurus revolver and the one spring is a 9 lb spring. It fit perfectly and now I have a revolver that I can pull the trigger. It is slightly less strong than the original since I can pull the trigger. It's very much like a new Ruger or Smith revolver trigger. I'll see if I get light strikes when I take it to the armory for some fun.

Good luck RedHead ! Hope it runs well for you now.
If the hammer strike is profoundly lighter, you may get some light strikes on some european .357 mag brands, because they might use harder primers than domestic manufacture. Should that happen, trim one of the larger frame springs you obtained to maybe a couple coils longer than the '85 spring and try that. Then, you can try trimming 1/2 coil at a time to dial it in.

There is so much you can do to a double action Smith-style action to smooth it without resorting to too light springs.
