I've seen mentioned on different gun forums that alcohol-based stains carry more deeply into the wood than water-based or oil-based. I know that on my stocks the alcohol-based leather dye and alcohol-based ink I used soaked in fast and deep and allowed for repeat coats very quickly to get just the level of stain color that I wanted. But man these mystery woods can be tricky to deal with!

You have that right! The butt stock from my 454 has been making me crazy. Whatever is used with the forearm is not the same type of wood used on the butt stock.

I don't even think the two woods come from the same forest.

It looks very good to me. Also has the benefit of knowing that the wood has been properly prepared. The Rossi finish is nothing more than shoe polish IMHO.

Sweet! That color goes nicely with the stainless steel.

I think I'm getting my butt stock where I want it using the Tru-Oil products. It took two coats of the Tru-Oil Stain to get it there. This is a water based stain that is supposed to be cut with equal amounts of water. I tried that but ended up using it full strength for both coats. I did not mind using a water based stain as it is very easy to correct coloring issues. I'm through the sealer stage so the finish is hand rubbed slick and looks very good. First coat of Tru-Oil went and it looks very good. I'm taking pictures and will open a new topic when finished.
