I've decided to get into casting . . . It will be primarily for my 45 ACPs and 454 Casuls. I've pretty much decided what mold I want for the 45 ACP . . . But could use a little help in chosing for the 454 and would appreciate any recomendations, advice, issues, etc. Thanks

Greetings! I would think that the Lee C452-300-RF would be a good, inexpensive, bullet to start with. A double cavity mold runs around $20, add a Lee 452 sizer (might already have one for your 45 ACP), and a box of Hornady 7140 Gas Checks.

The gas checks will help you take full advantage of the Casull's operating pressure (almost). The Hornady checks are made for .458 rifles but fit fine when the bullets are pushed base first through the sizer.

When up north there I shoot a BFR 454. The BFR's have a 1-16 twist so heavy bullets are easy to do. I use the Lee 265 g FNGC for plinking at about 1100 fps and then at least a 285 grian for serious hunting at 1250 fps. The lee 300 grain works well in my BFR also. At 1200 FPS it will probably go through any corn cruncher from any angle which is my goal asexits holes always leak out nicely.
Powder .. anything slow as 296, 110 all the way to 1680. 5477 also works well in my revolver.
So all this is not a carbine... but whatever will shoot in a 8 inch barrel will surely work well in a 20 inch from my experience with 45 Colt Revolvers and Rossi's.

I would go with RD's recommendation on this one. The C452-300 RF works great in my .454.

I'm with RanchDog as well. 1/2" holes from those 300grainers do let sunlight through- and they work well.

Although- I am running alloy gas checks as copper ones weren't available.

Tried the 210&250grain cast bullets- but had issues chambering them in the 454. Stick with the 300's and be happy.
