Magazine follower - which one

Post by Deolman »

I am looking to replace the magazine follower in my 357 Rossi. I see three replacement types - brass, aluminum, and stainless steel. I can see valid but different reasons for choosing one over the others. I am leaning towards the stainless steel but I would like to hear from others. What would be your choice and why?

I don't think you would ever know the difference.

I have both brass and stainless. No problems with either. After installation you will never know. I have listened to all the hype on the plastic ones breaking and that is the reason I have changed a couple on mine. But I have never had the plastic factory ones break or stick either and they are self lubricating being plastic. So I have them still in a few and no problems either. I am not in extreme cold weather either though. Once in they all work.

Likely unneeded modification and there's no real difference in function in the three metals. My old .357 came from the factory with a steel (not stainless) one. I switched out the plastic one on my Puma-era .454 with a brass one off eBay because it looked cool and that rifle was a full yet mild refinish.

when I purchase a new lever rifle, I go to Beartooth Mercantile and purchase a safety delete, either a basic model or saddle ring, and since Im there I will add a mag follower to the cart, they are not really needed like others have said, but Im already paying for shipping for the safety delete, and the followers dont cost that much, so why not.
I like the stainless because it is easier for me to see when the action is open and I can tell if the magazine is empty because I see shiny stainless instead
of a brass case.

If you are looking for the lightest and slickest of the three, the blue anodized aluminum follower Rossi is now putting in some of their models probably has a slight edge. My 2023 454 92 came with one. But I agree with all the previous comments about detecting a difference. If it came with a brass, plastic, or stainless steel follower instead, I doubt I would detect any difference. It is probably the one part that least needs "upgrading".

Cassy,
I bought one for my 454 also and when I went to put it in realized it was a blued metal. So I left it there. Should have looked first, but bought it when the rifle was on order.

Plastic parts will eventually age to the point of cracking or crumbling.
Some years down the road...
In the long term this is a reasonable replacement.

I dunno...
Replaced follower in Rossi 92 by brass one. In Benelli shotgun - made aluminum one.
No problem at all. Rossi - over 3000 shots. Shotgun - over 16000 shots.
Stainless seems to be more corrosion resistant... but... mag tube on Rossi is regular steel (blued version) so it will rust anyway :)
Brass is resistant enough.

If you want to stand out - I recommend titanium :)
But does not matter, actually. Replace plastic with any metal, treat for corrosion resistance if needed.
