Re: I got a Boyds Stock
I've never been a fan of those laminate stocks. I got to say that yours is the nicest one that I have seen. I was surprised to read that the fit was that good...
Thanks for sharing. Do they make a nice walnut stock ?

Re: I got a Boyds Stock
I went ahead and ordered what I thought was a stock set off Boyd's but it turned out to be just the fore end (never mind it said "standard length of pull" and "standard recoil pad" on my order . . .). My fore end has a lot of areas where it doesn't look like the coloring took and it is pine colored in several spots. I think I'll call Boyd's about it and see if there is a way to get one that's actually fully covered. Regardless, while looking for the butt stock similar to the OP's, all I can find are the "field design stock" that looks like the one below. Don, got any tips for you ordered yours?donhuff wrote:The finish is great with a smooth frosty shine.
The fit of the stock was ok, and needed a little trimming here and there. I also used some JB quick, since it matched the color of the wood well, and bedded it. They say that the fit may have to be adjusted some, so the misfit was no surprise, and actually you could have used it as delivered. I just wanted it to fit a little tighter.
The fore end needed nothing except for a punch and a little wiggling to get the band screw back in. The factory one is about as hard to get aligned too.
Just wish that they offered a rubber butt plate. This hard plastic one is slick, but the added length of pull and the better shoulder fit is NICE.
I will definitely buy another one, I'd rather spend a little time fitting the Boyd, that waste time refinishing the Ju Ju wood that comes on them. BUT what color am I gonna get next time!!!!!
Boyd's only shape option:
UPDATE: I went ahead and gave Boyd's a call. Apparently the lighter spots are as designed. It's more of a "salt and pepper" coloration than a "pepper", but as long as the butt stock matches. I also asked about the shape of the butt stock and they mentioned the picture on their site was a placeholder and they were really shaped more like the OP's. Here's a picture they shared from their Facebook page:
It's a bummer to pay separate shipping and the additional wait time, but I'll get the butt stock on the way. I'm still curious if I can find someone local that could fit the crescent plate onto the new stock. I think that'd look pretty good!

Harry,
Yes, my trigger is the stock one. It's hard but crisp and has always been good enough for me. It's not a target rifle anyway.

Re: I got a Boyds Stock
golfish,
Yes, they do make a "plain ole Walnut" one, then they have X grade and XX grade. I wanted to get one of the "Fancy" walnut ones, but internet reviews say that it aint no better looking than a plain walnut one. Sooooo I don't know whether to try one or not. I really love my 45 colt R92 and would like to Purdy it up a little, so I might try the fancy, and give a report on if it's worth the extra money or not.

s1xty7,
Yeah, I agree with you that Boyds website is confuzzing as hell. I can't help you because it's been to long and I forget what and how I did it.

Re: I got a Boyds Stock
I finally got the butt stock in as well. The one I received needs the groves for the receiver "fingers" (the long pieces of the receiver at the top and bottom that stick out rewards) clearanced further back and each groove cut deeper. It also needs the screw hole elongated to allow the stock to slide further forward. In addition, it needed filing and smoothing of the inner sections as they were pretty rough cut and not even. The stock itself is also wider and taller where the wrist meets the receiver. To top it off, the metal plate on the end of the factory stock is not the right shape. It's too wide at the top and bottom and not wide enough in the middle to fit the Boyd's stock. I may eventually get it all fitted and mount the stock, but it only reinforces how well the factory stock to metal fit and finish is. In order to get it even close to factory, I'll have to reshape sections of the Boyd's stock and refinish it, which is more than I was looking to do when I ordered it.
Ultimately, I'm not sure if I got lucky with a great factory fitment or unlucky with a poor aftermarket stock fitment. Both?

Re: I got a Boyds Stock
That’s a severe disappointment. Too bad that they don’t at least try to match it to the factory buttplate. Thanks for the detailed report!

Re: I got a Boyds Stock
Boyd's emailed me that the XX grade buttstock has shipped for my .45 Colt 92. This carbine is stainless and 9 years old.
I'll get to fitting it immediately. I've restocked some LC Smith and Fox shotguns with the old Fajen wood, so I hope I don't have any difficulty with this project. My intent is to take pics and write up the process.

9x80,
I have a basic walnut version on order right now. When it comes in, I'll post some pictures so we can compare to see if the XX grade really is any more fancy.
