Rossi Rifleman

Hi, first post here. Hope everyone is doing well.

I just got a new Rossi 92 in 45 colt and I want to refinish the wood. I want to get rid of the ugly reddish hue it has now and go with something more in the brown family.

Can I get some recommendations from the members here? I’m thinking maybe provincial, walnut, or dark walnut but I have no idea how those would look in this wood which I have no idea what it even is. Anyway, thanks for your attention. Looking forward to the replies.

I use Fiebings leather dye on all wood stain projects after reading about it here. It's alcohol based so you can mix your own colors as well as thin to your desire. It will not look blotchy from inconsistent penetration like wood stain does most times. Below are two refinishes that were taken to the white wood and then stained with Fiebing's leather dye ... mixed the colors myself.

Here is a Mossberg 500E .410 I redid with Fiebing's (poly applied). I wanted an old Winchester hint of red.



Here's the Rossi Puma .454 I redid with Fiebing's (no ploy applied). I wanted a medium brown.

Thanks GasGuzzler, man that mossberg looks amazing. I wouldn’t mind that at all. I wonder if I can finish with tru oil after using Fiebing?

Yes. The alcohol based dye will not reject Tru-Oil or other coatings.

I will second on Fiebings. If you miss on the color, isopropyl will remove most of it for do-overs.

I did a refinish on the blonde, but no stain - on the stock.
I had to do a little color to get the forestock to match.
About 5 coats of TruOil - rubbed out every second coat
