92 .44 Mag Carbine Ammo for Deer
I've collected a wide variety of .44 mag ammo - some for for the S&W 629 revolver, some for the Rossi 92. Right now I'm focusing efforts on decent round for the rifle and then will see how it performs in the revolver. Some of the specs look promising fps/ft lbs energy in my collection, but I'd love some of you guys to weigh-in on real world experience and what round you landed on. Maybe I'll get into reloading, but not yet, so I'm looking for a good off-shelf deer round. Here's what I've got (for now):
PPU JHP 240 1541/1267
Amer Eagle JHP 240 1230/805
Rem JSP 180 1610/1036
Win WB JSP 240 1180/741
PMC Bronze TCSP 240 1497/1194
PMC Starfire SFHP 240 1340/957
Hornad XTP 200 1500/1000
Hornad LEVERevolution 225 1410/993

Any of those rounds you listed will take deer, and then some.
Some of those rounds you listed, I carry in my 92 44 mag when Im in the thick bush woods loafing, in case i stumble across bear.

The Winchester White Box jacketed soft points are all you need. Fancy schmancy and expensive gummy tips or hollowpoints ain't necessary.

of any of those choices, depending on reliability with your R92, I'd just pick the one with the best repeatable accuracy at your expected range. My expectations are between 50-100 yards for the .44 mag, so I look for the round with the best accuracy with a minimum of 240 gr (minimum) bullet and 1500 fps (minimum). That results in nearly 1200 foot pounds of energy .... enough.

Hokey religions and gummy tips are no match for a good soft point in your rifle, kid.rondog wrote:The Winchester White Box jacketed soft points are all you need. Fancy schmancy and expensive gummy tips or hollowpoints ain't necessary.

I'm surprised the American Eagle are that slow. We chronoed some .357 mag 158 grain out of a 16" at 1800 fps.

Ya, I hear you regarding the "gummy tips". My only reason for buying them was to address the nonexistent problem of detonation of pointed (spitzer) in a tubular magazine. No pointies, no boom. I really only bought them to see if there was any accuracy improvement. Although I feel that the WWB is running a little slower than I'd like especially if I want to run them in my 6" Smith.rondog wrote:The Winchester White Box jacketed soft points are all you need. I agree mr surveyor; many of my purchases were based on a good heaping of velocity/energy. The PMC Bronze TCSP 240 1497/1194 look interesting. So now its on to testing for accuracy and feeding.mr surveyor wrote:of any of those choices, depending on reliability with your R92, I'd just pick the one with the best repeatable accuracy at your expected range. Same here - I thought they'd be cruising a bit faster. Their JSP is just a little quicker at 1270.jdl447 wrote:I'm surprised the American Eagle are that slow. We chronoed some .357 mag 158 grain out of a 16" at 1800 fps.
