Winchester 88

Postby HarryAlonzo » 14 Apr 2018 17

I've had this for about 6 months, and just got around to taking a picture. Model 88 in .243. I've added the rail, scope and receiver sight, and updated the sling mounts to quick release. I still need to build the sling, and pick up a cheek rest. I'm not thrilled with the pressed pseudo-checkering, but that's the way the post-64s come.

Pressed checkering or not, I think they are beautiful! I would have loved to have owned a 284 & 358 Win.

I like it.
Be a good rifle for sure.
243 be a good caliber.
Are you setup to reload 243 ?

At the moment, 44 Spl is all I reload. But I'm gathering a fair sized collection of 30-06, 300 Savage and now 243 brass for that possibility. So far, all I've shot is 100 Gr in the 243, but it's intended to be the coyote rifle with 80 Gr.

The 284 and 358 are both very attractive calibers. The 284 was conceived as a competitor to the 270, I believe. I'd love to own an 88 in 284 but they are rare and 2X - 3X the price of the 243s and 308s. The 284 mags are different from the 243/308, and as scarce/pricey as the rifles, although there's one that's available on GunBroker that's mis-identified. I've picked up one spare mag for $50, and that seems to be a deal.

I was shooting some 44 spc couple days back.
Shot them through a new super blackhawk 7.5" that i was trying to sight in.
25 yds I had bullet holes touching each other on the target.
First time that ever happened for me, couldnt believe the consistent accuracy.
I have gotten tight groups with other calibers, but not stacked on top of each other

Yup, it has a reputation for that. Elmer and Skeeter would be proud!
