.357 Remington Max

Been awhile since I posted here but, I have still been busy at the range and in the field. I have been shooting Single Action for a couple of years and am now changing out my .357 magnum Rossie '92 for a Uberti '73 in Colt .45. But I will be keeping the '92 as it's my favorite gun. Problem with it is that as a pig (hog) gun it's a little light on even when loaded to the max. So, I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with reaming the chamber out to .357 Rem Max? It's an unusual calibre over here but for some reason my local gunsmith has a reamer and has suggested that I convert my .357 '92 to a .357 Rem Max. I had a quick look at pressures and it seems to me that it will handle the modest increase. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Peter

My only thought would be that I'm not sure the 92 could handle the 357 Maximum's cartridge OAL. I believe it is around 1.990" and you didn't mention this specific consideration. You would need custom fit cartridge guides, both left and right. I consider the 357 Mag the poorest cycling of the 92 cartridge offerings and no doubt we see more of these problems with this cartridge posted here. I think it has a lot to do with the diameter of the cartridge vs. the length. I think the cycling issues would increase if it fits.

I have to agree with Ranch Dog. My 357 thinks the Lyman 358429 crimped in the crimp groove is too long to feed through the action.

Not having ever had cycling issues it was something I didn't think about. I can confirm you are quite correct. I 'made up' 3 dummy rounds at the Rem Max COL @ 1.990" and it was clear that in no way would they cycle! I should have looked up the saami specs first. The .357 Rem Max is 10.5mm (0.40") longer than the .357 Mag! Feel like a dummy myself now. Looks like she's my back up gun now.
Thanks for your advice.

I was shooting my max contender and my mag 92 one day and I tried to dump a max into the 92 from the top. That didn't go over so well, I almost got it jammed in there.

Has anyone thought about maybe a 360 Dan Wesson?

How about 200 grain .357 ? In the Rossi 92 that would be good. If the .357 is too light then go to the .44 mag,454 or the .480 any one of them would be better than the .357 or .357 Rem max. Not trying to pick a fight but sometimes those old hogs can be tough and mean, real mean. I use the .480 myself.

I believe one of the guys on here has gone the 360 Wesson route with some success.

Make smoke,

I shoot a 185-190gr .357 at around 1.615" OAL and a stiff load of 2400, H110, or Lil Gun. The longest my .357 guides will chamber is 1.630" if memory serves.

Thanks for all your reply's on this. Found the RR thread http://www.rossi-rifleman.com/viewtopic.php?t=4436 and an interesting read here http://www.wideopenspaces.com/360-dan-w ... ge-rifles/ I will talk to my local guy and see if he thinks it's might be a 'goer'. If I can get near the 2,000fps mark with a 158gr XTP I'll be happy.
