Rossi Rifleman

This rifle arrived at my FFL two weeks ago just as he was leaving on a week long vacation and about the time he returned we hosted a weeklong family reunion at our ranch (remind me later not to do that again)! Anyway, I picked it up today.

It is a Winchester M94 Timber Scout chambered in 44 Mag. It joins my TS chambered in 30-30. I believe they were both manufactured in 2005.





I had a hard time finding a 44 Mag; I didn't realize how few of both were made. Only 500 30-30s and possibly 100 44 Mags.

As the pictures suggest (hang tag still on rifle), my 44 is NIB which is lost on me. It will get treated with care, but it will get hunted like every rifle I own. This 44 Mag joins a Marlin 1894P and a Rossi 92, both scout rifles as well. I had a Marlin 336-44 but sold it a couple of years ago. It was a great rifle but there was no longer any spares parts, parts specific to the 336-44. The carrier had a lifter on it, a very complicated setup and most of the failures on the old rifles happened there and rendered them unusable. I also have a Ruger 77/44 but that will soon be hitting the road as I have not developed the warm fuzzy feeling for it.

With the M94 35/30-30, I have a post about that rifle; this will probably bring my Winchester buying to a close.

I looked over the .357 Ruger bolt but with the price I wasn't impressed.
Everything it did I could get out of a lever action at half the cost.

I took the Win M94 Timber Scout 44 Mag out for initial sight in with my TLC432-275-RF. Wow, same as the 30-30 Win. Very accurate and a cast bullet lover! No problem with getting it zeroed in at 100 yards!

It has a .423" bore and .429" groove, take a look at the rifling. It has a Micro-Groove barrel! 12 shallow grooves, .006", equally spaced with the lands.



Anyway, this rifle shoots great! I had some rounds made up for my Ruger 77/44 using H110, never could get that rifle to shoot anything, but the Winchester had no problem with them. I even used the 77/44's target which I had disgustedly left out on the 100-yard berm over a month ago. I just taped over all the old holes, the yellow tape, and rotated it on is side and shot three shots. 1.564" group (1.494 MOA). The 13 shot string for the Labradar ran 1857 FPS with a 6.2 FPS SD and 20 FPS SD.



Ended up shooting the rifle 21 times but all the chronograph at steel. This rifle and bullet combo with deliver a pounding. I felt it later in the day!



Now, I need to find a hog!
