7.62x39 Expansion In Water At 100 Yards
Posted: 01 Mar 2017 16:37
Did water expansion tests at 100 yards with some 20 year old China Sports 123 grain soft point
that groups well in my Mini-30.
Also tested Monarch 123 grain HP polymer coated.
Rifle used was my CZ bolt action. Both brands group well in the CZ.
The water buckets look bigger in the rifle scope.
The first shot of each brand of ammo was fired into the target to the right of the buckets
to determine the ammo's relative zero.
Then the expansion shot was fired into the buckets' 5 inch square cut out.
The 5 inch squares were cut out of both the front and back of each bucket,
allowing the bullets to impact the water bags without going through the buckets' hard plastic.
The hard plastic can limit expansion.
Each bucket contained a plastic bag filled with water (because the buckets had the 5 inch cut outs).
The China Sports expanded well, with 103 grains retained weight.
The casing and copper colored jacket would stick to a magnet, the lead colored core would not.
The ongoing China Sports corrosion test looks good so far,
but going to give it another couple of days before proclaiming it non-corrosive.
No expansion or weight loss by the Monarch.
The hollow point was not clogged.
