I had heard that you can use a penny to remove rust from a firearm. It has to be a pre 1982 penny that is actually made of copper, but the method does work.
I went throught a jug of pennies and didn't find a pre 82, so I went through my non-ferrous metal box and found a copper 3/4" pipe cap. Using it and Rem-Oil I find it does a terrific job one surface rust. Rust accompanied with pitting it will get the surface but wont do much for the pits. Essentially you flood the surface with a light oil and use a light circular motion with the copper object, wipe and repeat until satisfied. So far on the item I've done it hasn't affected the blue, but YMMV.
