Ordered Bifocals !

Well my eye exam went very well BUT the ole ( 84 ) non-dominate
right eye is as blurry as ever. I haven't worn prescription lens since
cataracts were removed from both eyes years ago.

Doc said there was no real need to replace the $15 Wally World readers
but he knows I'm a shooter and we had discussed this right eye thing
before.

So he did his thing with the instruments and WOW the letters on the
chart jumped out really sharp. So long story short ... ordered thin, light,
no-line bifocals and yes they are expensive but at my age will probably
be the last pair I ever order.

Should be ready in a couple if weeks. A buddy called, said he had a
.22 mag bolt action that he's never shot, would I zero it in for him ?
Told him to call back in a couple of weeks ;) !

Anyone use bifocals when shooting their rifles and what has been your
experience ?

Thanks for sharing ... Jim

Oh, the big winter storm !!! Maybe there's an inch of the white stuff on
the ground this morning. Flash wasn't impressed ... he turned some yellow.

I've been shooting with them for about 15 years without issue.

Good to hear, thanks.

Gonna hibernate for a few days, current temps 19 brr degrees.
Patchy black ice on the roads, most churches have cancelled
services. I might be able to get out but not likely to get back
up the snow covered drive.

Jim,

Are you a righty shooter with a dominant left eye? The new prescription corrects distance vision in your right eye? At 84, my Dad no longer buys green bananas (his line).

I've been woefully nearsighted since gradeschool, and have worn lined bifocals for the past 10 years or so. Bifocals have had no impact on shooting, since I shoot through the distance vision bit of the lenses. I've had computer glasses for the past 2 years or so, and those work well for pistol shooting (front sight in focus, target blurry). However, since I don't think I'll ever be attacked while I'm at my computer, I don't practice that way. I have good ol' lined bifocals, and I have the line a bit lower than recommended by my optician. I don't mind holding reading material low, or tipping my head back a little further.

Dad (nearly 70) has no-line trifocals and passed the (easy?) TX CHL hands on test with a 3" .40SW Springfield XD compact and little (by ratio) practice. You'll pick it up just fine. He's not a veteran pistol shooter but has a logical mind and listens to advice, capable of logical self-diagnosis.

No worries.

Oops.

Rifles.

I fixed up a really nice Marlin 25 (new looking 1983 version scoped) for him for Christmas. It's a squirrel gun to keep him from shooting the buds out of his fruit trees with a 20 ga. He can hit a hanging summer sausage gone bad from 59 yds standing braced with tri-focals so he's alright and you will be too.

That's me Harry and that's the expected outcome. I'll still use the single vision readers
for computer work. Jim

I have two friends that are also right handed and left eye dominant. They do fine shooting right handed with their right eye, but they do have to keep their left eye closed. Red dots and scout scopes drive them crazy. I'm teaching two kids to shoot that have the same condition, and I'm making them shoot left handed, based on advice I read on the interweb. My old friends have tried shooting left handed, but they both think it's too late for them. As I grow older, my nearsightedness is improving, but my ability to focus up close is degrading. Bifocals are okay for close work, but I need that tweener lens (computer distance) to focus on a front sight, unless it's a long barreled bolt action. I've been finding great comfort in red dots and optical scopes, and leave the iron sights for last ditch desperation.

Pistol shooting is not a problem, just tip my head to bring my left
eye in line with the sights.
I tried shooting the 92 left handed. I guess it's true that you can't
teach an old dog new tricks. Talk about all thumbs ! But if you can
start them young enough that would be the way to go.
Buckhorn sights were out of the question. Tried several peeps
then a Red Dot that I became pretty proficient with even though
it was only 1X. Currently have a 2-7X32 scout scope and that was
a big improvement. It will be interesting to "see" what the bifocals
will add.
The winter storm hit the area, snow has quit but this morning's
temp is a brisk 22. Wind chill less than that so no cold barrel
shooting !!!
Good luck with your students and do keep us posted ... Jim
