Observation !

As a follow-up I returned to the range and set up at 75 yards.
Using the same hand rolled Oregon Trail 158g Laser Cast Lead RFN
over 4.7g Tite Group I settled in.
Well shucky darn ... first few rounds low then very erratic ? I'm using
a rest of course which even made it more confusing.

Had some Xtreme Plated 158g RFN over 6.1g of Unique with me and
decided to try some of those. Totally different outcome ! The Xtremes
are all in the two inch ring !

Soo, different bullets, different powders do behave differently. So what's a person to
do with an accumulation of powders and bullets ? My plan is to use the lead in the .357
wheel gun. Of course I still have some Rainier and Berry's plated not to mention the
Xtremes.

Interestingly ... buddy e-mailed that he missed his first deer of the season. Took the
same rifle to the range and put four rounds in the orange right off the git-go at 100
yards. Hmm. if I see him this morning I'll have to ask if he was using the same ammo,
factory or hand rolled in both cases.

Comments are always encouraged and welcomed, how else can I learn ... Jim

Sometimes the rest itself can be the problem. I know with my miruku .22 that if I shoot with the rest at the muzzle end of the front timber it will group at about 5" at 50m. With the rest right at the receiver end it drops to 1 1/2".
Shooting lead after shooting copper can stuff results as well if the barrel is not cleaned well.

Saw my buddy at church ... said he used the same ammo so bottom line ...
He choked !!!

I'm consistent with the rest, the front pad did have a tendency to move
throwing the horizontal hits off. Fixed that with a jam nut but still pay
attention to it being locked.

I'm a Hoppes addict, run wet / dry patches till the final "mop" comes out
clean.

I'm not a big fan of lead but another bud who always complained about
copper fouling in his Henry .357 coaxed me into trying them. Still lean
towards plated.

Thanks for the reply Coop.

Coop, I've noticed what you've described as well.

The online experts suggest that you place the rest in the same place
under the rifle every time for consistency.
