Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Thanks for all the info guys.
I tried out the SS tumbler yesterday and all I can say is WOW. I like it! Aggravating as hell dealing with those tiny pins, but man seeing the inside of the cases and primer pockets so clean makes you think your handling new brass.
I still have not tackled that dillon yet. I only have a couple of loads calibers that I have loaded more than 500 of the same thing.....ever!

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Hey Don, can those pins be picked up by a magnet? I have the perfect magnet pick up tool I would think would be perfect for that set up. It's a large magnet inside this aluminum body with a manual release that pulls the magnet away from the bottom, releasing the pins or what ever your picking up. I'll have to find a picture of one.

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Yes Doc, they are. Frankford arsenal sells a magnet like your talking about.
Looks like dealing with the pins is the aggravating part about this system.

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Get a magnet Don !
I'm sure that fancy one Doc is talking about is worth every penny.
I bought a cheapie from the auto parts store. It's small and telescopes but
does the job. Might take a little longer but hey I don't have to bend over
to get those pins that fall on the floor. That's gotta be worth something ?
Yeah boy those cases look brand new ... Jim

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Magnet is a must, I have Frankfurt's and it work great just let it sit on something absorbent until all the water is out of it. Did my first run of bottleneck cases the other day, 20 243 and 20 7.62x54R, other than a little more work getting the pins out of the cases had the same results I get with the straight wall ones.

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
Don,
I've loaded a several thousand .45 ACP over the years on a single stage.
Around 600 or more .44 Mag half on a single stage and half on a Square Deal B.
Around 500 .30-06, 500 .308 and probably 300 .30-30 and several hundred 5.56 all on single stage machines before I got the RL550B.
I still load most bottlenecked rifle rounds on a single stage, Now a Forster Co-Ax which the dies don't need much adjusting so it's moderately quick for very good ammo. But progressive speeds up my loading straight walled handgun rounds in particular by a huge factor. If I'm loading bottleneck ball ammo in .30-06, .308 and 5.56 then I've got toolheads that I use once the sizing is done on the Forster and the brass is trimmed if required.
I've got the conversion parts to load just about all the calibers I shoot so I could load them on the Dillon but my shooting on most of the other rifle calibers is low enough that I can afford to put out a hundred or so at a time with the Co-Ax.

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
So now I have cleaned a bunch of brass with the wet SS pins. It seems like the finish it leaves is kinda "raw?". They tarnish rather quickly in the places where I touch them. Are y'all doing something to the clean cases to try and protect them while in storage?
I have run a few batches in my tumbler, after SS cleaning, with my regular lizard bedding walnut hull and NuFinish car polish mix. This does bring out the shine and leaves something on the cases that seems to protect them a little against tarnishing. Then I seal them up in a zip lock bag.

Not sure but the Lyman branded untreated corn cob for old-schoolers is an effing disaster. Clogs up all flash holes and even migrates inside cases to stay. I need to find a way to grind it up more.
Don, what kind of liquid are you using? It's gotta be more than water.
I had to put a little baking soda in my dry mix today 'cause I think I over-lemi-shined.

Re: There really is a Santa Clause
GG, I don't know what everybody else does, but after tumbling with a corncob product I get at pet smart with some Franklin Arsenal brass polish, the air compressor goes to work blowing out any stuck media. My routine. Short of using the SS pins I would guess it's SOP. I read someone's thoughts on this, to prevent all that time and effort, they didn't bother beyond the use of a Sonic cleaner. Me? I like shinny brass so it's worth it to me.GasGuzzler wrote:Not sure but the Lyman branded untreated corn cob for old-schoolers is an effing disaster.
