Rossi .45 Colt at 100

I got the 8 inch steel target out the mailbox yesterday and decided to give it a test run today; and I wanted to test some hand-loads. I took my redneck shooting bench to the back range. The first 2 shoots were with factory loads, Remington 225 grain hollow points. They were about 3 inches high at 100 yards. I'm shooting with my elbows on the bench and my hand between the forearm and the rest on the bench. Oh, and these are factory iron sights,

I fired 2 shots without a clank of lead to metal. Both shots were about 3 inches high, but between the chains. (Picture of the hole in the backdrop is after the gong hand knocked it around).

Instead of adjusting my sights or my hold, I decided to try my 300 grain Lee 452-300 RFN cast loads. BOOM-CLINK, a hit. Second shot had the same outcome. Man those hot hunting loads rock my world shooting the Rossi .45 with the metal, crescent butt plate. Felt recoil is about 2x that of my padded .270. But then again, I've never felt a recoil while shooting at a deer.

I fired 2 more shots using the Remington 225 HP. The first was high. The second rang the gong. Can you guess which impacts are the 300 gain lead bullets and the 225 grain HP?

Awesome. I think that Lee 300-grainer is going to really ring a buck's bell for you. I was banging the gong on my 100 yard berm this evening with my Rossi 44 Mag Single Shot. I'm shooting my 275-grain bullet at 1760. Might start trying to find a hog as the rifle needs a kill under its belt.

missionary, the target is 3/8 AR500 steel. And, yes you picked the 300 grainers.

RD, the 300 grain bullet is one you helped develop a load for. Thanks so much. It's not at the top end of the pressure that we discussed, but at 1566 fps, I think it will thump a whitetail pretty good.

300 grains at 1566 fps has enough kinetic energy within and under 100 yards to stop a heart from the impact not alone soft tissue damages and arterial bleeding. I'm not saying its not deadly past 100 yards just very impressive thumper you have ringing gongs. that at 100 yards is 1634 ft. lbs. of force.

Thanks AK, I hadn't run the numbers, yet. With the numbers Ranch Dog gave me, I could push the bullet a bit faster, but I see no need to do so. If there were grizzly bear in KY, I would probably pump them up a bit. But since there isn't, I'm pretty happy with the energy and accuracy of this load.

I was surprised at the hits. I had only shot 15 rounds with this bullet at 25 yards before ( five each with different loads) and I had not sized the other bullets. This load was the most accurate. Those 2 hit were the 16th and 17th shots with this load. I think it has real potential.

Not gon'na cost anything. Search feature works real good on the form. I searched for the term "452-300" by author "Moon Tree". This was one of the results: developing a .45 Colt load
