Any body have experience using a non-contact thermometer for checking the pot temps when casting. I have a Ryobi unit and am thinking of giving it try next time I heat a pot of metal. I have a Lyman analog thermometer i can compare it to. Wonder if anyone else has tried one.

I have tried it and they don't work. Some one on the cast boolets forum explained why but it was pretty technical.

Molten lead is too shiny.

The surface won't be the same temp as below surrounded by coils. No idea on why the unit wouldn't take a reading.

Like Okie and others have said, the refraction of the beam from the sheen goofs it.

Somebody posted about floating a penny on the surface of the melt as a focal point for using these thermometers.

I'm not vouching for the validity of this method, just passing it along.

If I can remember next time I heat the pot I'll give it a try.

I'm going PID with help but I happen to have an infrared thermometer and even a penny so....

Wish I could find a reasonable way to control y gas pot with a PID. It would be nice.

I use gas for smelting.
