Manhatten Arms Cap & Ball

MA Patented Dec. 27, 1859.JPG
I suppose it's an heirloom as it's been handed down over the years
and finally ended up in my hands.

Manhattan Fire Arms Mfg. Co. of New York produced some 175,000 pistols
but when Colt's patent ran out they immediately produced the Navy .36 cal
knockoff.

This one was my great granddaddy's and for the life of me I can't remember
whose side he was on. The leather holster disintegrated w/o me taking a
photo of it. Could have been either since MO was divided on the issue.

The springs for the cylinder rotation and hammer / trigger broke some time
ago. My favorite gunsmith had it for a year trying to locate parts and finally
trying to make new springs. Succeeded for the hammer but gave up on the
cylinder.

So it's a wall hanger now. To think as a pre-teen I used to strap that on and
play Cowboys and Indians with the neighborhood boys. If Dad knew I probably
still couldn't sit down.
