You guys and your .45-70 brontobullets.
You're as bad as me with my Savage 116 "pig gun" in .375 Ruger that puts out 2 1/2 tons of muzzle energy.
As long as we're having fun that's the important thing.
I found a few boxes of 500 grain .45 cal rifle bullets that were no doubt part of a forgotten project that I'm going to load up for the Pedersoli M86/71 as soon as I can find some gas checks for them and figure out how to put them (the gas checks) on the bullet bases.
Do they make a special tool or die for that?

If they have a shank cast on them, reduced in diameter from the body diameter, the simplest method would be running them through a Lee Lube & Size Kit of the appropriate diameter. If there isn't a cataloged diameter that fits, you would need to special order one.

In 2010, they really upset the cart when they retooled and started cutting chambers to spec. If you want a rifle with a SAAMI spec barrel, buy the Rossi or a Marlin manufactured after 2010, and avoid components produced by the cottage industries that are supplying wares that fit outside the spec. These Marlins are those built from 1951 through 2010 in any cartridge, the 45-70 Govt has only been available since 1972 in the 1895 model. The "cottage industries" would include Beartooth and businesses such as mine, Ranch Dog Outdoors.

SAAMI spec Marlin's chambered in 45-70 Govt. would be those manufactured after 2010 with the "JM" barrel stamp. The newer Remingtons with the "REP" barrel stamp are at SAAMI spec but have been having some finish issues.

They started even earlier than 2010. I have a 336SS 30-30 with a 91 serial # that I purchased in June 2009, I have to keep to oal to 2.425" when I load the original RD design.

I personally think it was when Marlin tagged up with Hornady for the gummy bear bullets. Hornady would have wanted spec chambers.

Saw a huge moose shot near a timber clear cut access road just south of Timmins in northern Ontario last fall on vacation that was shot with a Marlin 1895G and ONE of those gummy bear (.325 grain FTX) bullets in .45-70 Gvt.
The shooter told me he paced the distance off at 180 yards.
Looked like over 200 yards to me but I took his word for it.
Didn't get a real good look at the scope but it looked like a Leupold 2-7x33mm (one of the best and most compact bush scopes ever made).
They were busy skinning, cutting and loading the big bull so I didn't bother them further and drove on and continued my grouse hunt.
