mr surveyor wrote:nice work, Don. I love to see the cut-aways. Sure gives you a good sense on what's going on with the insides of the brass. That old brass certainly is thin, but I bet if it were beefed up a bit for modern loads it would make a heck of a good carbine chambering. Ten grains of Unique (that is the answer for almost anything isn't it?) and a 170 gr rnfp oughta do just fine. Actually, I don't have a clue what the load would be .... just an uneducated guess.
Now your talking! 10.0 Unique would probably be just right

According to the guy in that link I posted, that load would get you 1100fps....just right for a good medium power, fun to shoot load. That was in a pistol so add 3-400 for a rifle and it's right in the sweet spot.

Yes very thin.

Starline sez their cases are not balloon head and also the mouth part is a little thicker making it stronger and a little less fragile to reload. I know my 32-20 brass has thin walls like this, and it is really easy to crush one if you don't get the bullet started in correctly. You have to flare it, but then you get neck splits if not careful. One day I'm gonna load it all up with black powder and keep it separate. And buy a bunch of starline cases for it.

Yes it looks like trail boss. The ammo was made by Rem Peters, who back in the day IIRC owned dupont, or dupont owned them, but they were all kinda the same company.

Also something else that you don't see on modern ammo anymore. The bullets are sealed in place with tar, but I don't see any lacquer on the primers.

I can tell you that the 44-40 hot-rods nicely, 2400 has been my powder of choice as it's the one with the most info and testing that i could find. i have an old Lyman manual that shows some really hot loads, over 2,000fps with a 200gr jacketed bullet. i worked up .5gr at a time and settled when i hit an average speed of 1,812fps with a 200gr XTP from a 20" Rossi '92. that load has taken one yearing whitetail buck courtesey of my wife.

my LEE manual has some interesting data on 38-40 using Reloader7:
180gr jacketed @ 1,745fps w/25.8gr of RL7
200gr jacketed @ 1,610fps w/24.0gr of RL7
those speeds are obtained with the low pressure SAAMI standard.

44WCF: Thanks for the info on the 38-40. Re7 fills the case so you really dont need a crimp to keep the bullets from collapsing in the mag tube. I am going to be loading some 38-40 so will try the Re7. I am guessing the bullets were for the .40 S&W and 10mm.

Havent seen any jacket bullet data for Re7 but lead bullets like the Lyman 427098 has been used with Re7 with good results in the 44-40.

Dang, I would have thought that re7 would have been too slow for such a small case. An to keep the pressure that low, but then that might be why they used it, low press with a full case?

So using a faster powder,2400 lilgun etc, and getting the pressure up in the magnum range should really get those bullets moving.

maybe you could get SOMEONE to run it through Quickload? hint, hint. sure would be nice to have some data for powders like 296/H110 and LilGun at around 30K psi. maybe 35K? I think I extrapolated that my load of 2400 should be around 25K but no way to know really. say for160, 180 and 200gr bullets in 38-40 and 200, 225 and 240 in 44-40?
