Peep Sight Safety Prototype
Bloodied, but unbowed, I pressed on with making a prototype peep sight and safety. Original plan was to attach the peep to the safety with a bolt, but I after breaking the tap in the hole I resorted to silver solder just to see how the concept works. No effort was made to make this look nice.
The forward hole is where the bolt attaches the peep to the safety. The slot interfaces with the tang on the safety to hold the peep in position and still allow a way to rotate the safety. In this example I roughed in the hole with a row of holes and then used a needle file to match the taper on the safety. This is rough, but I knew I was going to fill it with silver solder.
It's way too tall, but by having the peep bolt to the safety you could make several different height peeps for different loads. I'll work up the load I want to use and then just make the peep the height I need. I also want to cut down the front sight post and bring it and the peep as close to the barrel as I can. The peep also needs to be a little wider around the sight hole.

I know it is rough but love the concept and it keeps the safety.

Good idea. You will always know if the safety is on. No loud click instead of a bang.

A sure fire conversation starter at the range or deer camp.

I'd leave it the way it is and tell people it was the rifle Jed Clampet was shooting when he discovered oil on his property.
It's amazing what some people will believe.
Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin crude.
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Re: Peep Sight Safety Prototype
So, I decided to go ahead and modify my daughter's safety. I tried to drill it but just dulled my bit. I tried another new drill bit and just dulled it too. Barely make a mark on the safety. This safety is HARD. The other one drilled like butter. So what's up with the inconsistent hardness of these parts? Now I'm wondering what other parts did or didn't get the proper heat treatment?
