.454 Casull & .45 Colt reloading

I live in Russia and going to buy ROSSI 92 .454 Casull 20" carbine. Unfortunately, ammo is very expensive in our country, so I'm going to reload. Please, help me with the right prescriptions for this two calibers. For example, Your favorable bullet - type and amount of powder - type of primer - accuracy and the distance - bullet speed and may be something else interesting. Welcome to the forum! Would be interested in hearing about how easy or hard it is to purchase a Rossi in your country.

Same with supplies and components. Will you be buying bullets or is it possible to cast your own.

Also, tell me what powders you have available that you might work with. My choice in both cartridges is Hodgdon's Lil'Gun but that might not be available?

Finally, you going to hunt with the rifle? If so, what critter?

To buy a rifle in Russia you should have a 5-year hunting experience with the shotgun. If so, there is no difficulties to get the license. The price of Rossi 92 is about $1060, 1 cartridge of .454 Casill is $2.50. We can not buy cartridge components from abroad, that's why they are expensive. I'm going to cast bullets. We have our Russian powder, mostly different type of Sunar and Sokol, but it's possible to find analogue with yours. I'm going to hunt with Rossi, mostly for wild boar, elk and roedeer.

I believe this is going to be a tuff nut to crack. You will not be using the same components (Primers, powders) we use. To be honest a primer is a primer in my opinion. As long the shell goes boom when the firing pin hits it that is what matters. The powder you will be using is not what we have available here. I think we can help you figure out a good starting point if we knew some more information. First we need to know what the burn rates of the powders you will have access too.

I did some research for the gunpowder plant in Russia named Kazan State treasury gunpowder factory. They show the sporting industry gunpowder they produce.

Sporting and hunting gunpowder

Nitric grained highly porous powder form such as "Sunar-32", "Irbis-Sport 32", "Irbis-32M sports", "Sunar-35", "Irbis-hunting 35", "Irbis-hunting 35M", "Sunar-24 / 1 "," Sunar-24/2 "," Irbis-24 ", and others are designed for hunting and sport shooting, shotguns and bullet cartridges 12, 16, 20 and 410 to the caliber smoothbore guns.

Nitric grained highly porous powder form such as "MAS", "PS", "Sunar-SVM", low-porosity grained powder form such as "Sunar-5, 56", "Sunar-7, 62", "308 Sunar-Win" designed for bullet cartridges for rifled sporting and hunting weapons. Kazan gunpowder factory in demand all domestic ammunition plants and firms, and in finished cartridges are supplied to the domestic market, and in nearly 70 countries.

For your needs you will be using powder for bullet cartridges. Sunar-5 56". Sunar-7 62" or 308 Sunar-Win. We would need to know what the burn rates for those powders are to cross reference what powders we use. That information has to be out there somewhere I just don't know where right now. I will do some more research when I can and see if we can help you out.

Welcome also. If you have access to a lathe you could turn down your 7.62 x54 rim and cut off to proper length for 45 colt and 454 casull.you can form in a press and have good source of ammo. We can generally buy your ammo cheaper than any other brand and some of us shoot your moisins and ska/ak-47's ad others

I have access to the lathe. In case of using 7.62x54R, what part of case should I cut off? The rim diameter, the neck or something else? And has anyone used .410 cases?
