Rossi Finish Removal II

Post by Ranch Dog »

I started refinishing my ninth rifle yesterday afternoon between chores. Soaked the stock in hot water for about an hour and then "washed" it with a 180-grit sanding sponge. I did not use the sponge to sand, just washed it with the grain to feel any imperfections in the surface. Within seconds of hitting the water the dye was leaching out of the wood.

I rinsed them with clean water and set them out to dry. No Rossi finish left.

Talk about no work, there is no effort to this method!

The methods companies find to lower costs!!!

That should be a nice stock when you get a proper finish on it.

Yeap! This is the fifth stock that I've done this "dunk" to and it works very well. The dye that is left in the wood is simply features the highlights in the grain and helps it stand out when the Tru-Oil is applied. I have the B&C Filler & Sealer on now, that is the next step.

Haha! I might consider complete rifles, rifles that I do not currently have. Insure them so that they are not lost in shipment.

Water soluble finish on a hunting rifle  ........if that wasn't so pathetic it would be funny ;) ........well I always had kind of a macabre sense of humor so I think it's hilariously funny anyway.
I always put linseed oil or Tru-Oil on (right over the Rossi "shoe polish" factory finish) my stocks (depending on their new-out-of-box color & what I wanted the finished stocks to look like) before I ever took them out in the field to preserve & moisture-lock the wood.
The dye or whatever cheap concoction Rossi used to finish their stocks in the factory just functioned as the coloring agent or pigment for the linseed oil or Tru-Oil which was the "fixer" & provided the preservative, element resistant aspects of the finish.
Half an hours work (and 24 hrs curing time) turned out an attractive, functional stock finish but certainly not up to the "Westley-Richards" level beauty of the stocks RD has posted on this thread & others.
I don't want stocks on my guns that are too pretty to take to the bush.
I like my guns to reflect their owner.........practical to a fault, homely & tough.

RD, The finish on my 92 is reddish. Is this the same type of finish on the RG? I was assuming I had to strip it with a chemical. I would rather do it this way if possible. I hate the red tone to the wood.
