RG4570B "B.O.O.B."

Newbie on deck! I'm one of those guys who set aside (got rid of) his firearms upon the arrival of my 1st child. I may have been naive, but I didn't want guns in the house with children running around.

Fast forward to "Grandpa" status, and my 1st buy for my re-entry into gun ownership is the Rossi Rio Grande. 45-70! I don't hunt. Just like to SHOOT. Always liked guns that went "BOOM" more than I liked "bang".

Ok! On to my point ...

Yesterday, I picked up my long-deliberated upon RG4570B while traveling on business. I had debated the purchase for so long that once my mind was set, I couldn't wait until I returned home to get it. Now I have to wait for the weekend to send lead downrange with it (damn it to hell). So, anyway, there I am in my hotel room, cocking my gun, working my action, when "BAM" ... the action jams!

WTH?

Here's the thing ... Holding the gun in the proper firing position, parallel to the floor, "scope side" up, the action cycles fine. Even pointed straight up at the ceiling, no problem. But in the course of pacing back and forth, working the lever to break in the action, the rifle started to approach a 120 degree angle and that's when the hang-up occurred. It flat jammed on me! It wasn't until I returned the gun to parallel to the floor that it freed up. This is repeatable. I notice that if I listen carefully while raising the gun through an arc, that there is a point where I hear/feel something shift inside. Once I hear that, if I cycle the lever, it hangs. Return to level. It's free. I repeat ...

WTH?

I had no tools to field strip it last night. May get to do that over lunch today.

Any suggestions?

Nothing wrong with the rifle, just like the Marlin it copies. Gravity affects the locking bolt. At some point as you rotate the rifle along its longitudinal axis the locking bolt responds to gravity against the bolt, locking it in place.

I notice that if I listen carefully while raising the gun through an arc, that there is a point where I hear/feel something shift inside. Once I hear that, if I cycle the lever, it hangs.

That is the point that the locking bolt responds to gravity.

Kids and guns DO mix as long as the guns and ammo are properly secured and the kids are instructed and taught when they are old enough to hunt and shoot safely.
Having young ones around to train to be safe and competent shooters is one of the greatest joys inherent in having a family.
Gun free homes are unfortunately where most "antis" come from.
Teach your kids to know & respect guns .......not fear & hate them.

My girls are grown. They've gotten to enjoy shooting from their respective boyfriends and extended family. No "antis" here! "Pro" all day long!

And yes , that jamming is puzzling to me also. Never does it when loaded though, cause I don't turn it over like that.

It shouldn't be that puzzling. Take the rifle apart and look at it. The locking block is not connected to anything, lever pressure is what holds it in place. When the lever (bolt) is unlocked, the block is free to move.

But it seems like if the block is not getting into the slot in the bolt ( and it shouldn't cause the bolt is not far enough closed for the slot to line up with the block... i think) it would not do that.
