45-70 Rio Great But.......

Post by Ninety Caliber »

Bought this back a few months ago and am just now getting to play with it !
The fit and finish is awesome, action is like butter, wood to metal fit is exceptional ,however, when I shot it the first time it was at real close range and it seemed ok. When took it out to the range to zero it after I installed a tang sight low and behold , I couldn't get it on paper at 25 yards! It took me awhile( senior moments) to realize that my front sight and therefore my barrel was off-center! Since the Lyman #2 has no windage adjustment this got interesting. I got a bore-sight laser and lined it up that way. Had to move he front sight over a little more that 1/4".
Looks a might strange now lol. What I was wondering is if someone makes a windage adjustable front sight I could install or am I gonna have to live with the front sight sitting whopper-jawed in the dovetail?
Your thoughts oh wise ones?

My thoughts are why is it off so much. How is the tang sight mounted, pardon the question but I'm just not familiar with attaching one.

Mounts to the tang screw and another forward of it drilled and tapped for a 10/32 screw(all s.o.p.).in a perfect world if the tang is true and the bbl is true very minor if any at all correction should be needed. The factory buckhorn is barrel mounted so you wouldn't see the problem until you remove it and use the tang sight.

Yeap, but I don't know how to correct the issue offhand.

Does the bolt's aft movement clear the sight?

Sure does! It's dead center between the ears of the bolt, ergo: barrel I think :(

To set the windage on the Lyman, you put shims under one side of the base. It is trial and error but once it is set you wont have to fuss with it much.

That makes perfect sense..... I wanted to say if it were me I would line up the front sight dead center and figure a way to move the rear sight. Would have never considered using a shim. This redneck would have moved the tang whatever direction it needed.

Great post Ironhead!!

Well I guess I must be missing something? I had to move the front sight to get it to line up with where the laser was showing on the target as in this example 1. Period represents laser dot and one represents frt sight. After I moved he frt sight ! That's where it needed to be top of exclamation point is frt sight more or less, see what I'm saying guys?

Before1. After ! I don't think shimming the tang sight would have helped. I'm guessing there is a slight curvature to the barrel?

I would think that shiming one side of the tang would help. If you consider the "long arm" of the tang it is going to lean away from the side which was shimmed. This method should allow your front sight to be near centered.
