.454 in .45 LC Rossi

Post by vtoran »

Has anyone tried to shoot .454 in .45 LC Rossi 92? Since there is no difference in construction of .454 and .45 LC rifles, it should be possible. And .454 is much better if you want to hunt something big.

I thought the .454 and .480 R92s were different from the others....

I'm pretty sure the stock and the magazine tube are different. The .45 doesn't have a .454 throat is my guess.

I wish my .454 has the .45 style tube. A friend of mine tried to send the .454 cartridge to .45 chamber. It fitted perfectly.

Its doable, some 454 Casull cartridges with heavy bullets might not fit. The Casull has an extra .03" of chamber in the form of a leade.

The early A. Rossi Casulls didn't have the threaded magazine tubes. Apparently, there were enough warranty claims of those tubes departing that they went to the threaded tube.

If the 454 Casull cartridge will chamber, they tend to use heavier and longer bullets, I think it would be safe to shoot. The 454 receivers are not any different than the 45 Colt that I'm aware of. I don't think the barrel threads are any different but I have not pulled a barrel. 454 Casull factory ammo is going to be felt with the curved metal butt plate of the standard rifle.

If a 454 would shoot safely in a 45LC then why wouldn't Rossi just label one gun for both cartridges like the 357/38sp. I can imagine shooting the 454 would be quite uncomfortable with no butt pad. I know my 44 mag gives me quite a bruise every time I have it out.

I don't load 454 to full pressure but I would be leery of doing so and chambering in a gun not specifically marked for it. I thought I read a while ago that the 454 had some special heat treating on the receiver.

I don't believe the 454 receivers have been treated any different than any of the other rifles. If so a manufacturer tends to use that in their advertising material and no such claim was ever made. Having drilled into the receiver of both a 357 Mag and 454 Casull, I would say they are the same; surprisingly soft.

I do agree with your thoughts on the barrel stamp. My concern with a Casull cartridge in a 45 Colt is the slightly shorter chamber of the Colt. If the bullet should be set back into the case even slightly, it could have catastrophic results.
