Independence Day!

Post by Moon Tree »

Have a happy and blessed Fourth of July. And let us not forget those who got us to this place.
Life isn't about the toys you accumulate, but about the memories your create with those toys and friends.

The sad thing GRVO1 is that no matter what day is selected, at least 50% of our population does not recognize the importance of the event. They think of it as irrelevant history and wouldn't look up from their phones to even consider the cost of a free country.

I was at the VA Hospital in Austin yesterday with my dad. I've always shied away from my military past until about a year ago when I started taking him there. I realize how much I have in common with those walking the hall, much more than those I pass on the street, WWII guys and gals through current conflicts around the globe. It is crazy to sit there and just talk. Veterans with up to 70 years of an age difference but we are all alike, we put our country first.

When I left the US Army in 1975, I locked it all in a box and didn't want to revisit it. My children know nothing of me in uniform and I'm not sure I'm ready to change that. I did just renew my conceal carry license and sent my DD214 in with the fee. It really affected me on its return to see "VETERAN" stamped across it.

Similar to my Dad. He was in '69-72? and never said a word (although it was no secret). He never did "verteran stuff" until about the time he got to the age of retirement. To me I always thought it was because he was drafted as a full time scholarshipped student with a full time job and a pregnant wife and they drafted him anyway....but it worked out fine.
