Smoothing But Not Bluing Sharp Exterior Edges

Post by jmagda »

I have read in here about filing/sanding off sharp edges in various places on a 92, then re-bluing the now-exposed steel. But what if I like that exposed look (antique/worn)? Can I leave it un-blued and just keep it oiled?

I don't see why not. Those areas will be a little more prone to rusting, but as long as you take care of it, it'll be fine. The environment in your area will influence how diligent you'll need to be; higher humidity or nearness to salt water & sweat will of course make oiling a more regular affair, as will the natural evaporation rate of the oil you use.

Environment and storage will tell you.

Here in north Texas I can high polish previously blued steel and it'll stay shiny like chrome because the metal is hard enough on the surface after polishing. In other environments perfectly blued and oiled steel still rusts.

Yeah, depending on the environment and how you take care of it.
I'd prefer NOT to go that route in Austin to Savannah, Naples to Virginia it's too moist and I've seen tool steel rust overnight if not protected. A good coat of car wax helps keep things from etching in such situations.
