450 Bushmaster

Post by DennisH »

I've been thinking of a Ruger 450 Bushmaster and was wondering if it really was that much better than a Rossi 92 in 45 Colt. A little more power but enough to replace my Colt and 308 Mossberg Patrol for under 150 yard hunting. Maybe 200yards at the max.Any thoughts before I trade into one.I wouldnt trade my Rossi but I have a Mauser 3000 in 3006 I dont use much but is super accurate.

You're on the Rossi Forum, so I feel compelled to recommend the Rio Grande in 45-70. I shoot the 92 in 44 Mag, and I can't say that it will do what you're looking for. I think the 45 Colt is comparable, but I have no personal experience. The 450 Bushmaster makes a lot of compromises to shoehorn into an AR-15.

They make 450BM in a bolt action. I didn't know if it was anything special but claims of very accurate out to 200 yards with little drop.

Yup, I understood that you were asking about the Ruger bolt action. Here's a good read about AR-15 cartridges in general:

Were I wanting to use my "American sporting rifle" for deer here in Ohio I'd at least get a 450 Bushmaster upper or maybe get the upper and build a lower. We have to have straight walled cartridges in our rifles and the Bushmaster is the only one that comes close to being a deer rifle in these woods around here. However, since I have '92s in 45 Colt and 357 mag and single shots in 45-70 (Wizard) and 40-65 Win (Sharps) it's probably not going to happen. It might be fun, but it's just too expensive to shoot for fun.

I am not really interested in an AR type rifle. I like a regular type scope mount vs the scout type set up on my Rossi 45 colt. I do really like my Rossi for a light weight short hunting rifle.I was looking at the bolt action Ruger. One of the things I like about the 45 is not worrying about over travel of a bullet going 600 or more yards.I didn't know if anyone had tried one. Best thing would being able to just use 45 bullets to reload in a straight wall case. I am thinking of narrowing down all the different calibers I have that I reload for.

Nobody's piping up with 450 Bushmaster experience. Sounds like you'd be happy with a 45-70, 450 Marlin, or maybe even a 444 Marlin. I think you could find a side or angle eject lever to meet your needs.

Went to the LGS and was looking at their 45/70s. No Rossi there. Mostly Marlin's.I'm not in a hurry but they did have a Ruger bolt in 450BM. About 150 cheaper but it also felt pretty light compared to the lever actions. They did have a Rossi 454 Casull a while ago and I waited a couple days thinking about and it was gone.It seems any used Rossi lever action are kind of rare in my area. Maybe no one ever gets rid of them. I know mine would be last one I would ever get rid of.

I find the Ruger Ranch intriguing. I always thought that Marlin missed the boat by not chambering their bolt action rifle in 450 Marlin. It would have made a great elk & nilgai rifle. I say go for it and I'm looking forward to the report!
