Might have to give up riding until hip replacement

Post by desertrider »

Went for a short ride with my son this afternoon, forty miles total, and realized that the pain in my hip was about all I could concentrate on.

I have an appt. 12/08 for a 2nd opinion with an Ortho. Specialist to discuss hip replacement. I'm only fifty two, but I've had chronic pain for about 6~7 years already.

Tearing off a 250+ mile ride on a Sat or Sun used to be no problem for me up until about '09, but as of late my hip has deteriorated to the point that even a ten mile ride just isn't fun anymore.

Anyone here had hip replacement?

That has to be disconcerting ! Been on motorized two wheelers since 1964 so I understand the how saddened you must feel. I trust God will give the Docs wisdom for the right solution.

My wife had a hip replacement, and we did our research first to find a good Dr. She had the surgery in the morning and was walking in the late afternoon. Some pain from the cutting, but right from the start, hip pain gone. She followed the Dr's orders and was soon walking normally for short distances and built up to a daily mile within a few months.Three years later she walks 2-3 miles a day, pain free...

Oh, and we be old timers; 70+ years old...

Glad to hear your wife's surgery was a success! I've decided to do the front surgery as opposed to behind the hip. Recovery time is supposed to be quicker and with less restrictions on movement.

Absolutely, Missionary. Been riding since I was nine. This isn't the first time I've had to stop though, I broke my back in '97 and walked away from bikes on orders from the doc and threats from the girlfriend (wife now).

After recovering from my back injury I swelled from an average of 260lbs to 330lbs and have pretty much stayed within a few pounds ever since. All this weight combined with years of injuries has resulted in plenty of sore joints thanks to osteo arthritis.

Still hard to kick the habit.....
