That's far west Texas. It's desolate. There's no people out there. LOL
Others here could tell you more about the terrain.
It's an 8 hour drive from here, nearly 600 miles.

Re: bullet selection 454 Casull for Hog
It was between Marfa and Valentine. My dads were with a Win M94 30-30 at about 35 yards. Mine was with a 444 Marlin at about 30 yards. Both we spotted about a mile away, but luckily my dad's chased a doe right to him. Mine was at least a mile away, and I got up to 165 yards but decided against the shot because of high winds and the fact that a pronghorn is such a small target. I let the animal bed down and left and drove completely around the 29,000-acre pasture to come up behind him. I drove complete around that pasture because the country is so open it is hard to stay out of sight, kind of need to move out enough, so the curvature of the earth hides you.normAK wrote:Sweet....! What range/caliber? Oh yeah, where was this?
Once on the downwind side of the buck, I crawled out to where I thought he would be about 100 yards away from me with the wind coming straight from him to me, darn if it didn't stand up about 30 yards from me. It didn't even know I was there. BOOM!
To put the horizon in perspective, the year before I killed this deer on that mountain in the background, on the slope that is in view.
Using GPS coordinates of both kills, 53 miles away! Oh, same ranch. They are big out there!

Re: bullet selection 454 Casull for Hog
I had a phone conversation with the guide for my hunt next week, rather than the outfitter I booked with, and he told me that its going to so hot that the pigs will only be moving at night. This means that it's very unlikely that a shot will be over 150 yds at most. So....
I have the Rossi sighted in with both the scout scope and the Echo1 thermal using Barnes 250gr XPBs, at 100 yards the bullet will have right at 2000 ft lbs of energy. That should be plenty to knock over a pig, assuming I put the shot in the right general vicinity.
7 days and counting, I'll be counting hours soon!

No pigs for Norm on this hunt. Saw lots of big boars on the game cams but none showed up while hunting the stands.
Still, it was fun to be out hunting. Beautiful country right on the Rio Grande river, 60,000 acre ranch.
