Snake Shot in Rifles

Post by 3Horse »

A dumb and crazy question. Has anyone fired snake shot (.44 and .45LC) in a Rossi 92? I've fired the same in handguns, and at close (snake shooting) range it always performed well. Are there any drawbacks in shooting from a carbine or rifle length barrel?
Weather is warming up on the coast and snakes are beginning to crawl.

I've fired a few test rounds in 44 Mag with my 16 inch 92, and it patterns just fine. I don't recall the particulars.

As long as it comes out the muzzle I'm good. I'll be shooting it out of a 24" barrel.

Finally we figure out why Rossi runs such a low rifling twist, so the gun can shoot snake shot without flinging the pattern to heck and gone.

Greetings
Some years back on Castboolits fellers were running tests with snake shot.
Ended up that if a piece of paper (plain old typing paper) was inserted in the case forming a cylinder in which the shot was placed then the trip down the barrel was much less affected by the barrel twist.
So you might give it a try if you need /want better patterns than what bare shot down the tube will give.
