So im wanting to pick up a long arm (or two!) in 410 and my options are the Rio Grande, the Circuit Judge, or a Mossberg 500 410HS http://www.mossberg.com/product/500-tac ... ity-50359/
And im hoping the good folks here can help me out.
As a disclaimer, i have no interest in expanding into a third caliber (after 410 and my 357 R92) so the ability for the CJ to fire 45LC has zero impact on my decision
Im using the weapon primarily for Home Defense with a typical load of 00 or 000 Buck. The weapon will have a secondary purpose of a 'camping' gun that is something to take with us incase of a surprise black bear or coyote. It will have a tertiary role as a light hunting weapon from squirrels to small deer using slugs or bird- or buckshot. It must be usable by the whole family of small framed shorties that we are
Heres what im looking at
RG - Pros: cheapish, smoothbore, no choke, looks good. Cons: only 2.5" chamber, worried about possible feed and ejection errors of 410 shells
CJ - Pros: looks awesome, 3" chamber, rotary cylinder ease of use, probably shoots fastest, smoothbore, no choke that would prevent use of slugs. Cons: most expensive, legal grey zone in some states that id rather not want to argue in court after a shooting, perhaps hardest to service or repair considering unique design vs popularity of design of RG and M500
M500 - Pros: great design and reliable, good price, 3" chamber, spreader choke for indoors. Cons: lowest on Style Factor, spreader choke for outdoors, no rear sight (i hate front bead only), i think its longest of three (not certain on this one)
So there you have it. Any opinions or insight is appreciated

Re: Choosing a 410 weapon
Of the 3 I'd take the Mossy. We have a 500 in 20 that we picked up in early 1970 and I'll admit that on occasion it's been rode hard and put away wet and it just keeps on ticking and barrels are readily available so you could bob one to legal length for home use.
The CJ is neat and some time back I almost added a 45/410, thought about too long and lost the chance. Then I started reading about their tender stocks and decided that maybe I lost nothing.
Not sure what is left in the gun world but you might add one of the 410/22 or 410/22WMR. Short handy and versatile.
Winchester and possibly other make 410 loads specifically for defensive purpose, take a look at their specs.
Make smoke,

Re: Choosing a 410 weapon
I won't shoot at a black bear with a .410 unless someone stole all my other guns.

Re: Choosing a 410 weapon
I second that, with one caution. My old Savage Model 24 slings a 410 slug down and to the right about 3 inches at 7 yards. The buckshot & plate self defense loads are no better. I blame the full (?) choke. The current incarnation is the Model 42.Ohio3Wheels wrote: Not sure what is left in the gun world but you might add one of the 410/22 or 410/22WMR. Re: Choosing a 410 weapon
IF it must be a 410 then the Mossberg is the way to go.
I'd consider a Winchester 94 in 410 if I could find one but only as a fun gun.
For home defense I'd be picking up one of my 12s or any of my centerfire rifles over a 410, might even pick up one of the rimfires by preference.
