Next thing you know, you will be posting a tale about this Rossi... which I'm dying to hear!
YOU HAD TO BRING THAT UP DIDN'T YOU?

Re: It sez ALL other rossis..... right
JD, your a little off there as rossi did not make the rocket motors. I make those myself.
That engine in the picture is a model airplane nitro motor.
it uses a little of this, plus methanol and castor oil, for fuel.

These are the rocket motors and some of there propellant grains. In the close up, you can see where I pricked up a little piece with my fingernail. Most folks are suprised to see that it is so rubbery.
There is a shot of my smallest 18mm motors and a few propellant grains. And another one with my biggest 4.5 inch motor and an 18mm beside it. Another shot of a bunch of the different sizes in between.

Re: It sez ALL other rossis..... right
AK, As you can see by the 5 gal bucket of nitro, I use to be pretty serious about model racing. I mixed my own fuel for racing boats and for airplanes, and a little bit of 1/8 scale on road cars.akuser47 wrote:Nice nitro motor there i use to run nitro cars n trucks fun stuff.
Back in the mid 80s and early 90s, we raced boats a lot and did real well at it. At one time we (me and the oldest son) owned 7 APBA national speed records, and 6 IMPBA (international model power boat association) World records. Back then, I once bought a 55 gallon drum of nitro and a drum of methanol, cause we were going through the gallon jugs so fast. 20% oil 75% nitro and 5 % propylene oxide was rough on engines...........and your wallet!!!!
Nowdays we still race boats, but only gasoline fueled ones. A gallon of avaition gas and 8 ozs of Quicksilver oil is oh so much cheaper, and easier to find the neddle (set the mixture ).
We went to our first "record trials" a couple months ago, since back in the 90s, and managed to break two records!!!!!! The guy that owned them was there too and he was not happy about it. That was harder than any race I have ever been in, just watching him make run after run thinking that any minute he would get it sorted out and knock us off the throne. We kept making runs too and whittling the record down .01ths at a time as the water conditions kept improving for our setup. Then the water got slick, and it was over for us. But He never got any faster either so we came out on top.

Thats pretty cool to have records like that. I have even looked at the gas rc cars as they look fun and fuel is a gas station away the ones im lookin at are two cycle. Looks fun but I have enough trouble being home for anything as is.

Re: It sez ALL other rossis..... right
Oh MAN, the gas engines are SOOOO much easier to deal with. They have a built in fuel pump so the attitude of the vehicle, does not affect the mixture. And the needles are so much more... er....ah...setable(?)akuser47 wrote:Thats pretty cool to have records like that. We set them on our boats and never move them unless there is a 50 degree change in the ambient temperature. And then, it's only a very predictably 1/8th of a turn. If you have to move the needle during a race, something is wrong inside the engine. But they do have a real ignition system with coils and flywheel magnets and such. But the system is almost bullet proof. It even fires UNDER WATER! We have had a boat hit a roller and launch into orbit. Then come down on the nose and travel UNDER WATER 20-30 feet, surface like a nuclear submarine, and never loose his race position! But that don't happen often. Usually they roll over, ingest some water, and die upside down. The spark plug will last until someone runs over you and breaks it off. Even tho we run them at 16 to one instead of 50 to 1 like they are designed for.
