Need Help for 92 44mag

Post by RMK »

Need advice for shooting lead bullets in my Rossi 92 44mag. I picked this new rossi 92 in 44mag 24 inch octagon barrel recently. The main use will be offhand shooting at paper, not hunting. Picked up some 240 grain SWC bullets and loaded with unique. Results were terrible, much leading and no accuracy at all. I did try loading up and down with powder and different primers, but no change. Got some other lead bullets from reputable source in 215gr and same results. Then tried all this again with H 110 and got pretty much the same. My shooting friend had a few 240gr jacketed hollowpoints, so I tried 9 of them with H 110 and put 8 shots into a 1.75 High by 2.75 wide group at 100 yds. on the first try. So I am pleased to see the gun will shoot and I need to figure out what kind of lead bullet I need as I plan on casting my own. I cast a lot of bullets for my other guns so no problem there. The cast bullets I did try were .429 and when things didn't work out I decided to slug the bore and came up with .4315 So anybody have a great bullet style, dia mold, sizer size to recommed?

Merry Christmas

Hi Rudy, It's hard to believe that anything you loaded up using Unique did not work

Just kidding. I use the Lyman 429421 245g SWC to good success with the 44 in my R92. That bullet and 9.0 Unique is my favorite load for the Rossi and I have used it in my ruger blackhawk, a friends BH, and his S&W 629, for 30+ years. I recently tried out Red Dot powder cause I could not find Unique and I got about the same accuracy with 7.0 grains. It "seems" a little slower than the unique load. I find out soon as I just opened a christmas chrony from mrs santa.

My R92 slugs @ .429" and I size at .431 mostly to fit the rugers cylinder throats. The mold did not drop them big enough at first, so I reamed out the bottom driving band with a 7/16" reamer and now they drop around 435. Plenty big enough for me to size down to fit. Odd to hear that yours slugs at 431 cause most of the time the rossis are real close to 429. Have you tried .432-433 bullets yet?

Hello Don,

I have only tried .429 bullets as those are the only ones around. I want try larger ones. I am sure about the slug size, I did it twice to be sure. With the hard cast .429 bullets it leaded very badly and shot 3 foot or more spread at 100 yards right from the first few shots. I will post what I find out.

Thanks
Rudy
