More powder

Post by donhuff »

Scored big at the shooting range today.

A fellow wanted to get rid of some of his powders that he does not use anymore. He had a lot more but most of it was for magnum type rifles. Had a few that I could use, but not enough of one kind to make it worth it to me.

I LIKE IMR4227 for my magnum pistols, and it works great in the 32-20 for HOT loads. Gotta figure out what to do with that much 1680. I use to use 680 in my 357 Herrett, and I still use it a little in my 30 carbine ruger blackhawk. Will have to see if the 1680 is similar. But for $100 I could not pass it up.

The 1680 is popular for the 7.62x39

Yeah,I have read that it works good in the ak bullet. But I don't have one of those guns.

I looked it up last night and it seems that a good many folks think that it works pretty well in the 45-70. I thought that was a bit odd until I looked at a burn rate chart and it is right beside IMR 4198 (which I use in it), and RL7, and one tic slower than 5744. I use this chart so you can tell the ones that "overlap" each other better http://www.lapua.com/upload/reloading/r ... rt2011.pdf

If I start using it in the powder hog 45-70, it won't last very long.

Yeah I thought so. And it had to happen just a couple of weeks after I bought nearly 50 pounds of powder at the gun show!

He had a lot more but the only thing he had enough of one kind of, was some N130 and N140

The old guy that sold me the powder, was impressed with my ruger buckeye 32-20 and how hard it was hitting my steel plate targets at 100 yds. Thought it was a "MAGNUM". I said, well it is the way I load it. Then I shot some 41 mags with 8.5 Unique and 220g cast. He said they hit about like the 32..........so I put some, 170JHPs with about a cup full of 296 behind them, through the cylinder and then I got a better reaction

Old guy was shooting a custom rifle 6x47, built on a 40x action, and had what looked like a stainless steel truck axle for a barrel! He used 1/2" yellow dots on white paper for a target, and there was still yellow all the way round his groups!

Good buy. IMR4227 is a top powder for the magnums. Perfect for pistol sized rifle cartridges.
