two new Rossi 92's

Post by sghart3578 »

I have been fortunate enough to find two new 92's in the last month.

I bought one in 45 Colt that is terrific. It shoots 200 gr RFN's very well.

I was also able to buy one of the 20" 357's that were sold by Tooele Shooting Supply and mentioned in a thread here. I have never seen a Rossi this nice.

I have owned three 92's in the past few years and have had fair luck all the way down to terrible luck.

This new 357 is almost perfect. The sights are straight, the blueing is great, the wood fit is good. It came well greased and the trigger will require no work from me. The only thing that I will do to it is replace the ejector spring.

It looks like a 1-16" twist. I shot it today and I was very impressed.

If these two rifles are an example of what Rossi is going to start shipping then their troubles are over.

Do they have the keyed hammer lock?

Steve, do you know the date of manufacture of the rifles? The 2017's had it stamped with the serial numbers. Here is the date of manufacture lookup based on serial number: Find My Model.

I'm surprised at the 1 in 16 twist. Most of them out there seem to be 1 in 30 or there abouts.

Neither rifle came with the key lock that I had on my previous 92's.

Michael, I tried the serial number lookup that you provided and had no luck. From my DROS form the serial number on the 357 is 7CR0009--. I hope that my FFL didn't key it in wrong.

The 45 Colt serial number comes up as being built in 2015. It is 5IN1803--. It is also a fine rifle but it is not as nice overall as the 357. But I am happy with both.

I should also clarify something. On my local California forum a reader asked how I was able to shoot and evaluate these rifles if I had just started the DROS.

Well, I use an FFL in North Highlands CA that is wonderful. The Gun Range is a full service gun store and indoor range. They will accept shipment of your firearm and handle the paperwork at a modest cost. And while you are waiting out the 10 day waiting period you can shoot your new gun at their indoor range any time that you want.

They are great folks. I have no financial ties to them, just plugging a great store with a great staff.

Your FFL sounds outstanding, I doubt they keyed in the wrong serial number. It is really strange that either of the rifles, especially the 2015 rifle, doesn't have the hammer lock.

I have to issue a correction. I got the 45 Colt rifle out and put on my glasses and it does indeed have the lock on the bottom rear of the hammer. Sorry about that.

The 357 mag rifle is still at the FFL but it came with a keyed gunlock in the box. I will go by there and check it for the hammer lock today.

If it helps any, the brand-new .357 that I just received does not have the hammer lock; just the firing pin block on top of the bolt and the craptastic generic cable lock that comes with everything.

My 2017 .357 doen't have a hammer lock either. Are we talking about the firing pin block safety?
