Rossi Rifleman

For over 2 years I have been trying to get my 24" .357 Rossi to shoot decent. By decent I mean a 6 inch group at 100 yards. Most of the time my 10 shot groups are 10 inches or larger. I have tried different bullets and powders and anything else I could think of. I have a Lyman aperature on the front and a Marbles tang sight on the rear. I am now wondering if the barrel bedding could be at fault. Has anyone run into this problem or am I just lucky?

Did you slug the barrel?

My first question, in that you mentioned "barrel bedding," would be whether you removed the forearm or not? I doubt the forearm stock is applying much pressure, I did remove the thin wafer of wood between the barrel slot and the magazine tube but think a poorly relieved barrel against the forearm screw can be a big problem. There are some topics about this, none lately, so you would need to do some searching.

As far as the shooting, start small. If the bullet groups aren't touching or near touching at 25-yards, it isn't going to get any better slinging them out at 100. It is tough to get into this without a discussion of ammunition as well, what are you shooting?

Have you checked the muzzle crown?

I had a worn .22LR, that grouped like buckshot do at 25 yards, at 10-12 yards...

After recrowning, it could hit again.

Easy recrowning with large slotted brass pan head bolt and 600 grit lapping compound or JB Bore Paste.

The first thing I did when I got my Puma was to slug the barrel. I found my barrel to be a bit over factory/SAAMI spec so I sized my bullets accordingly, while my rifle is a .44 Magnum, the principle is the same.

I do believe Rossi's 92 barrels generally run to the high side of SAAMI spec for most of the cartridges they chamber for, though my 357 was silly accurate with 140 grain XTP's running about 2000 fps.

I finally got around to slugging my barrel. The slug measured .355. Before I slugged it the bullet measured .358. I have been using 12 grains of 2400. I shot 5 rounds today at 50 yards and got about a 5 inch group. I really like the gun I just wish it shot better.
