.44-40 src

Post by eljay »

I know that dating the rossi '92 is a daunting task, but I have mine dated to roughly 1987. but that is not the info I was seeking, I have owned rossi's in .357, .45, rifle and carbine, round, octagonal. half round half octagonal, and I am down to just one now (plus a browning b92 in .357, miroku .22, and a wincheter 1918 .32-20) a SRC in .44-40, my question is, what is the rarity of the SRC in .44-40? thanks for any info.

Good morning
Been a Rossi owner for many years since Interarms / Navy Arms were bringing them in. I remember seeing the listing for 44 WCF but ya know I do not know of ever seeing one. We were 45 Colt shooters.
Looking in my 27th Blue Book the Rossi model 65/92 was made in44 WCF from 95-98.
Legacy (Puma 92) no 44WCF recorded made in #27 Blue Book.
Navy Arms Model 92 imported the 44 WCF from 1999-2003.
Interarms records are a mess. Hard to know what and when they did import Rossi. But as we have several in 45 Colt it is obvious they were flowing right along.

So possibly there are fewer. #27 Blue Book does not list there being a "Premium Price" for 44 WCF so I would not think there is a very low / rare number existing. Well could be shooters that have them hang on to them as the alternative is the Winchester 1892 44 WCF that is easily 2x the Rossi price.
Today an average Interarms / Navy is worth a few $ more to those who specifically prefer them (me). So I recon a 44 WCF shooter who does not have a batch of Winchester 92 44 WCF's would / maybe be inclined to get a Rossi 44 WCF and pay a bit more over the standard 44 Mag price.
That is my take on that. But this is all about the U.S.of A. Your being on the other side of the Big Blue changes a lot. Like here in Peru. You would think with Brazil being just "next door" there would be a flood of Rossi model 65 / 92's. Not so. None ! So here in Peru that 44 WCF could be "the only one" !

interesting that blue book states 95-98 and navy arms 99-03. the reason I dated mine at 1987, was a gentleman on one of the many forums I cruise, has a rossi 92 which is within a few numbers of mine, and he bought his new in 1987. the serial number on mine is NOO2141. I am not worried about the value, just recall anecdotal tales of the .44WCF not being too common, as I get older, I find the carbines easier to hold than the long rifles, which reminds me, I also have an armi san paolo octagonal rifle in .44 WCF, but its a '73 copy. must sell that one day. totally off my topic, but have you ever seen a rossi '92 in .38 special? I have a vague memory of seeing one in the earl 1980's with Brazilian police markings.

From what I've seen the SNs matter not. They were not made or at least imported or sold in any serial number order. My old school SRC .357 has 1987 dates all over the parts but the serial number is useless.

hi gasguzzler, you're no help at all LOL, what parts have a date on them? don't know where mine came from, it has amadeo rossi on the left of the barrel, by the rear sight, made in brasil on the opposite side, and .44-40 win. just under the rear sight on the right hand side. the s/n is on the front underside of the action, same as a Winchester. interestingly, the rear sight has been removed and the slot filled in with what looks like solder, and a martini cadet early model rear sight has been fitted, the front sight has been cut off the barrel band and a new blade has been dovetailed into the barrel in front of the band. looks like someone tried to replicate an el tigre carbine. shoots well, handles nicely with a smooth action and from memory, the price was right. just trying to learn a little more about it.

I know where there is one for sale. It's a 20" SRC, someone put brass tacks all over the stock, Indian style.

It's in a pawn shop in Ozark Arkansas, for $650 (if I remember correctly). It's been there for a long time.

You'll have to take it apart. Mine has date type codes on the major components out of view when assembled.

I have one of the Legacy Puma 92's in 44-40. Bought it at an auction as new old stock 10-11 years ago. 20" SRC, an identical one in 44mag went for $10 more than mine. Rare? Maybe, maybe not. Desireable? Not so much. I sure like mine though.

I did see a newer 44-40 at a gun show earlier this year but I breezed right over it because I was really looking for a 357 and I already had a 44 mag. If I found one now I would buy it in a heart beat.

My Rossi 44-40 was purchased new in late 1987.
