Shooting High with .357 Mags

Post by zig25 »

Just went out to shoot my Rossi 92 20 inch barrel in for deer season. I first was shooting .38 specials 158 grain plinking reloads and was basically point of aim out to 50 yards and grouping well, I generally shoot .38 and .38+ps out of this rifle for critters around he house and plinking. I then switched over to my .357 mag reloads. 158 grain XTPs CCI 500 SPP and 200-Mp (18 grains). I couldn't even connect with paper at 25 and 50, at this point I had lowered the ramp all the way down. I finally went over the my steel torso sized target (a-C zone) at 35 yards and aimed toward the bottom. I hit the target up near the shoulder. So I am basically shooting approx 8-10 inches high with that particular load. Does anyone have any advice regarding this.

My thoughts were to try and back down the powder charge a little bit and/or switch to a heavier bullet? Or am I going to have to get new sights or try and scope it somehow.....any advice is appreciated.

I shoot heavy loads 158 grain is my smallest. 180 grain my heaviest. Some need to replace front sight or alter it for specific rounds. I'd pic a favorite load that's consistent and adjust the rifle for it. Stick to then. Mine is not versatile. If I shot 38 special mine wouldn't be on target at all. Keep us posted to wgat you find.

The issue is the ramp is all the way down so I can't change the that. Maybe I need a higher front sight to bring POI down?

Zig, I have 3 Rossi 92s, all three shot high and all 3 needed taller front sights. Good luck

I can't help you. Mine is an old model with a different style of factory sights.

My 45 Colt shot high and I had to change out the sights. My 357 bought 2 years ago shoots point of aim. With both factory 158's and my Lil'Gun reloads I am on the 2nd step of the elevator and right on at 50-75 yards. Basically if I cover it with the bead it gets destroyed..

I am wondering if they mix up the front sights at the factory.

I'm not speaking from experience, as my 24" 92 shoots to POA with the factory 158gr that I feed it.

I seem to remember someone saying that they filed the inside of the buckhorn rear sight down and deepened the notch until it matched POI.

Good luck.

I haven't run a lot of 38's through mine and with the 357's I shoot anything from 160 to 180 grain bullets. One notch up on the elevator and I'm POA at 50. Fifty is about my limit with factory sights and my eyes, but another 2 notches will put me on at 100 when I do my part. Still plan to have both the 45 Colt and the 357 ready for Deer in December. Still haven't decided which one yet. The 357 is lighter, but I have a good 300 grain cast load for the Colt and it hits like a Peterbuilt.

With both guns I found a reliable load and worked from there. The Colt has a Marbles tang site and I guess I got lucky with factory sights on the 357.

You could try changing the load a little (up or down?) or changing to a lighter bullet. Sometimes small changes have dramatic effect at the target. Better would be to fit a williams or similar peep sight. Try 1 against your rifle first to see if you get a slightly lower position. On my rossi, the williams 5d sight will adjust lower than the fact sight.
