Slugged my barrel

Post by mrcabinet »

And it measures .431. The 240 gr. LSWC and XTP I've been shooting are both right at .429. This might explain the lousy groups I've been getting! Now to find a larger projectile. I see that Everglades had .431 JSPs, but that's all I've found, and who knows when they'll get more in. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reasonably priced .431 source? Coated would be fine.

Are all the 92 barrels oversized, or is mine just an odd duck? Would Rossi change it out under warranty (it's almost new) or would I just end up with the same thing?

Roze Distributing has a dandy 240gr JSP bullet measuring .4315 that works very well in my .44 rifles. Has a big, wide meplat, smacks my steel plate with real authority, and they're accurate. They also mushroom incredibly in water jugs, can't wait to try one on a deer.

Oh, it's my understanding that SAMMI specs for .44 mag rifle barrels are .431, whereas it's .429 for .44 revolvers. So yes, .44 rifle/carbine barrels are larger. Probably has to do with pressures, liability, lawyers, etc. For cast bullets, you'd probably want .433 or .434 even.

Ive also read of others slugging their 45LC M92s with similarly oversize bores so you're not alone

Those Roze bullets look like they'd do the trick - very similar to what Everglades had. I think I'll slug my Redhawk to see if they'd be good for that too before I buy 1k of them!

I was intrigued by this separate spec and looked into it a bit. Seems that SAAMI spec was only for the Marlin with microgroove rifling which they stopped using in 2007 for the .44 magnum.

From SAAMI: (see the 12 grooves called out)
