Well, the moment may have passed on this particular thread, but I came across a recent article that compiled incidents - by caliber- of bear attacks thwarted by deployment of a handgun. Being as things are a mite slow around the forum, thought it might be worthy of some wintertime reading ...

Thanks, Arroyo! That is a good read! I think either the 454 Casull or 45-70 Govt is the way to go. Only one incident with each. The bears got the word and left the folks that carry them alone!
