First time out with 44 Mag
First time out with 44 Mag
I took the 92 out for the first time. It is the 16" barrel 44 magnum. I have a Skinner rear sight and factory front sight.
At 50 yards it was shooting about 5 to 6 inches low and at 100 if was dead on. I really do not plan to shoot it much past 75 yards. I know that I can file down the front sight but was looking at replacing it. A brass bead would be good but looking for any suggestions.
The gun shot better with MAX 265 grn JSP than it die with 80% of max 44 Special and 44 Magnum 240 grn SWC.

I think you mean 5 to 6 inches high at 50 yards. Then you need a higher front sight, if you want to be on at 50.KnotRight wrote:

Harry it was shooting low @ 50 yards. I had a friend shoot it and he too shot low. We put some clay pigeons on the berm @ 100 yards and I was shooting about 2" high and my friend hit 2 of them with 3 shoots. It was the 2nd of the 3 shots.

Re: First time out with 44 Mag
If you are shooting that much low, at 50 yards and dead on, at 100 yards, you either have a very special rifle, or you are aiming differently, at 50 yards and 100 yards.
Only explanation to me is, that at 50 yards, your target is between the top of the "horns" on the Semi Buckhorn sight, and at 100 yards, you aim correctly, using the small notch, at the bottom of the "Horns"
This is how you should aim, every time:
And the target is then just above the front sight, NOT Above the Horns.

Re: First time out with 44 Mag
JRex is correct on the sight picture.
Hornady has a ballistic calculator you can plug in close approximations to your numbers and get the trajectory but with .44 Special levels you should probably be about 5" high at 50 for dead on at 100.
With .44 Magnum levels you should probably be about half that high at 50 for dead on at 100 depending on your exact velocities, ballistic coefficients and so forth.
It isn't really surprising that heavier powder charges (faster) loads would shoot better in these guns.

Re: First time out with 44 Mag
As indicated by points 1 and two on the diagram. (Obviously, not to scale). So the question is, is 100 yards point one or point two? If it’s point one, your POI will be below the sights at 50 yards. If it’s point two, It’s likely above the sights.

Make smoke,
There you go again, injecting reality into a perfectly good illustration.
Must have been thinking about those other three guys who were having trouble figuring out the sight picture on the Buckhorn (INCLUDING one of my buds who had fun getting out shot by his own gun by two of his shooting buds because he had never seen a buckhorn before and was superindexing it at the tips.
