Much like the crossbolt safety on one of my Marlins. It has it's uses.

Thanks J - I didn't think stripping the wood was a good idea. I took a chance and used some wood stains I had on hand to match the forearm and stock. Took my time and once it met my satisfaction, I Tru Oiled the works.

Xshot, I'm new to lever guns, what do you mean by this ^ ?

That's a great looking gun, can't wait to get mine home...I just bought one of these with the 24" oct barrel. I wont be able to get it home until this Thursday (Calif) I ordered the SG DVD today..

I have never owned a lever gun, I'm a little worried about taking this one apart. I've read about flushing the works with brake cleaner and working the action. I was always taught never to "dry fire" a gun. When you guys say "working the action" you just mean the lever, correct?

Sorry for the stupid questions...just trying to learn..

It's actually not a big deal to take a 92 apart and put it back together. I have two DVD's that show how to do it. One is Steve's Gunz Rossi 92 and the other is American Gunsmith Institute 1892 & 1886 Rifles Technical Manual & Armorer's Course. Whew! That one's a mouthful! Either one of them is a good step by step walkthrough you can follow along with while you work on your gun. Steve takes a more direct approach, the AGI video explains more technical stuff but it's a bit rambling.

I'm really hooked on 92's. I never owned a lever action before but these are nice guns!

golfish - when I disassemble my rifle, to work on the action and refinish the wood, I new more work would be required. Basically I fitted all parts forward of the receiver. The goal was relieve stress points and allow a few thousandths of clearance for expansion as the barrel heats up. A side benefit is the rifle disassembles and re-assembles effortlessly - POI shift from a hot barrel is also minimized.

When you disassemble your new rifle, it will become obvious where things are binding and need work.

thanks guys, I'll take a look at the dvd and decide what I want to do. I have never worked on guns. I have cleaned a few in my day but not had one all apart..

Just so I'm clear on this, you guys are not dry firing the gun when working the action?
