480 Ruger Range Report

Post by 357cyrus »

Weather be damned I decided I couldn't wait any longer to finally fire my 480 Puma. The temperature made it up to 40 today, but it was overcast with the wind steady at 30mph, gusting up to 50. So this was more about burning some ammo, checking function, and comparing this rifle to my Mossberg 500. The Rossi functioned great by the way... other than the sights. That problem was made worse by my poor choice of target (black paper, behind black iron sights.) I ended up just shooting at 25 yards, since I didn't like the sights and target combo, and partly because the wind knocked a tree down across my range before I showed up! Chronograph is at about 20 yards, because that's the only hole in the canopy I've got where tree limbs don't cast shadows. The bottom left shots you'll see were to sight in. The other shots grouped up and right because I got tired of moving my chronograph, and that's where I needed to aim to thread the needle. Looks like a little stringing, but i was just kinda aiming into space on the paper not any certain point. Next time out the chrono won't be involved, and I'll be able to shoot for accuracy. Back to function... I haven't changed out any of my springs yet. I've heard these 92's can really fling brass, but mine flipped them about a foot straight up and right back down. Pretty easy to catch actually. Maybe the previous owner already changed out the ejector spring. All rounds loaded as smooth as if they weren't there. The hammer spring was a little stiff, but not terrible.
.
When it comes to recoil, the 480 is no %@*&$ cat, but its definitely a step down from the 12 gauge. I'd say its more like a 270WIn in terms of recoil energy, but with more of a hard shove from a shotgun, than a jab from a rifle. Here are the numbers I could quantify with my chronograph and a ballistic calculator. Velocities were recorded at 20 yards, but figured back to the muzzle. Look how fast that 480 catches up in terms of energy!

---------------Barrel-------Empty-------Capacity-------Ammo--------B.C.-------Weight----------Muzzle-----------25yrd-----------50yrd-----------100yd

Great going, nice to have one that's free of major problems I'll bet. Will be watching for a follow up report soon!

That is how all six of my R92 flip and stack it and you are quite right that it becomes quite easy to catch it. I do that out in the field, even at night, it is just right there. I had bought two of the SG springs but have not used them as there hasn't been the need.

Here is what the recoil calculations look like.

Greetings
Now that is a pair of thumpers. I have a couple Rossis in 45 Colt and with a 300 grainer they are enough for my little bony body without some extra padding. That 480 would be that bit better being a fatter bullet. About all that will beat it would be a .500. Hard to beat a big bore Rossi...
I shoot round ball out of several 12 bores to include 2 Mossi's . At 1550 fps I would not hesitate to hunt any critter on this side of our globe if I could safely get to 50 yards and under without having to stop a charge. A .68 caliber and larger projectile makes a wonderfully large hole.

That recoil calculator is pretty cool. Looks like i wasn't too far off with my 270 Winchester comparison. This is how close they are when i punch in the numbers from the 270 i used to have. LOL Sorry for the hillbilly attachment, it's all I could manage for now.

Hey, it works!

Will you be able to use the 480 Ruger for deer hunting in Ohio?

I've heard from a reliable source (also i few unreliable ones) that Ohio is in the process of changing the rules for next season (2013-14) to allow hunting with rifles chambered in pistol cartridges. Thats one of the reasons that lead me to snatch mine up when I saw it.

But to answer your question... As it stands now, no I can't hunt deer in Ohio with my 480 Rossi. I can subtract 200fps and use my 480 Super Redhawk though! Stupid laws...at least they're worth a good laugh from time to time!
