92 in a 94 stock

Post by Me163b »

Finally found a set of polymer stock for Winchester 94 and mate it to a Rossi 92. Forearm is pretty easy, all I had to do is sand open the barrel channel a bit to accommodate larger barrel diameter near the shank.
Stock needs build up on the upper tang and sanding down on the bottom tang in addition to the area where the receiver meets up the stock. I used JB Plasticweld putty for the build up. After I de-grease the stock with brake cleaner and rough up the surface, putty seems to stick fairly well.

After all the clean up and sanding, I spray the entire stock + forearm with a coat of "Textured" spray paint and then overcoat it with black. Texture help to blend in and cover up surface inconsistency and minor blemishes.

Over all, I am very happy with it. I always think a stainless steel gun ought to have a weather proof polymer furniture.

Thank you! My main concern now is how will them putty hold up over time. I am concern about putty to stock adhesion. I tried several brands and types of putty and this one seems to work the best.
I guess only time and multiple fun trip to the range can tell !

It looks pretty good. Will you still be able to remove the stock?

Yes, it's a bit tighter than the original wood, but it's hand removable. I applied a generous coat of Johnson's paste wax as releasing agent, so nothing is bonded to the metal.

My guess from looking at the size of the magazine tube is that your rifle is a 357, correct? Do you think the for-end would fit any of the larger calibers?

Yes, mine is 357 Mag. I believe the for-end can accommodate larger magazine tube. The cut-out in the for-end is a lot bigger than mine magazine tube, I had to "bedded" the magazine tube with putty.

My experience with JB Waterweld, aka epoxy putty is that it is bullet proof! I used it to seal a cracked Harley case and it is still holding 10 years later! How does she shoot with the new stock?
