Circuit judge 45/410

I just purchased an EoTech 512LBC holographic sight with laser to go with my recently purchased and still not even fired yet CJ 45/410 (too cold outside to go to the range) - anyone have this Eotech site or an opinion on how these will match up? I'm assuming/hoping that the EoTech will mount easily on the weaver rail installed on the rifle? I wanted the ability to have both eyes open when using this sight for the .45 and the laser for the 410 home defense aspect.

Well hey there Suribachi, hope yours works good....I am not a owner of that site. I bet any good lazer work nice on yur CJ.
,But I do have a lot of experiense with it in 45/410. All I will say for now is far as the gun goes, throw out logic.
It will work better with standard pressure rifle loads. its a heavy hitter.
It does great with 410 stuff, good as any 410.
When I am sleeping in tent anywhere my CJ is right next to my pit bull, who sleeps under my cot.

You know what I love about it, if you do have to grab it and shoot, it doesnt ring my ears. +guns +corn

I have an EOTech XPS2 and a SureFire Light on my CJ and like the setup.
The EOTech is mounted to the factory mount all the way back so that the on/off/adjustment buttons are accessed easily with my trigger hand thumb. The on/off for the light is on the back of the light. With my hand loads I can consistantly ring a 5 inch gong at 100 yards, the 1 MOA dot on this sight means it only covers 1 inch of the target at 100 yards. I like the idea of the lazer on the new sights. With my gun sighted in at 100 yards, it is not ideal Point Of Aim for short range 410. With your setup you can set the lazer for best 410 POA and the holographic recticle for best 45 POA.

Thanks salt for the information and the accompanying photos - big help to visually see your setup and how it all sits on the CJ. After giving it some more thought, I decided to hold off on buying the EoTech or any other scope/sight for that matter for the time being and take the gun out and actually shoot it. A practical suggestion made by a good buddy who owns several rifles and shotguns and who is also an avid hunter. Basically give the iron sights a chance before plopping down cash on a setup that I may not need or like. He is also very keen on shooting the CJ himself! So as soon as the weather permits, we're going to the range or his property and test it out and then decide what I actually need vs what I'd like to have and go from there.

One of the reasons driving my original decision to go with the holographic sight was the both eyes open aspect. I bought the CJ with my wife in mind and she cannot independently close her eyelids without having to use her finger. I used to laugh about it until I started looking at rifles/carbines that she would be comfortable using in the event she would ever need to for home defense. My buddy basically said she'll use the 410 defender shots if it ever comes to that and two eyes open is fine. He's right. So spending more on the EoTech sight than I did on the rifle itself also made me take a step back and reconsider.

That being said, it was suggested I just get a (less expensive) Leatherwood or comparable scope for the .45 out to 150 yds. In my case, there is no need for the ability to quickly focus in/find the target. And as far as the 410 goes, point and shoot.

We'll see.

I wanted to ask another question regarding a traditional 4x scope - for CJ would you recommend a pistol scope or a rifle scope or maybe even a shotgun scope for the most practical use in shooting the .45 out to 150 yds or so? Taking into consideration eye relief/less likely to get blowback, etc.? Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond and help/educate me so I don't blow a wad of cash on either an overkill, impractical or a flat out worthless choice.

Your buddy's advice on shooting the gun before spending a lot of money on a scope is good. I found the CJ generally shoots pretty loose groups with most factory ammo, that plus the cost of 45 colt is what started me into reloading. My best loads so far are using Hornady 250 grain XTP bullets. It is important to know if you get into reloading, the CJ is rated for standard pressure loads only. If you are going to stick with factory ammo, I suggest trying different ammo and note which one groups best and then stick with that ammo. About scopes, a pistol scope has too much eye relief, I suggest either a rifle scope mounted rearward or a scout scope mounted forward. I have a Leupold FX-II scout scope on my Rossi 92 and it can be viewed both eyes open, magnification is only 2.5. The Weaver 4x scout scope is highly rated by many on this forum, others can testify if it can be shot both eyes open (in consideration of your wife).

My understanding is that scout scopes are intended to use with both eyes open. Actually I think someone said it is more or less mandatory. Probably wouldn't work for me due the big difference in vision between the left and right eye. I have a hard time with holographic sights for the same reason.

Make smoke,

Yikes....... I am confused. Lots of considerations, variations and potential limitations. I'm wondering if the CJ's Weaver rail is suitably positioned and long enough to accept a scout scope? After researching a bit it seems the scout is primarily a both eyes open scope with eye relief distances varying between 4" to 12" or so and 10" plus in total length. Room on the rail for ring placement?
The iron sights just won't work for me, The rear sight is a blur without my reading glasses but I can see the front sight fine and with my glasses the rear sight is crisp but the forward sight is non-existent. Prefer not to wear prescription glasses when shooting.
I'm leaning towards getting what works best for me out to 100 yds for plinking/target. My wife just needs to be able to shoot the 410. As I said earlier (I think), I bought this primarily due to the uniqueness of it being a revolver rifle as well as being dual caliber. And more importantly, it fit the bill as a home defense rifle that is actually allowed in the great state of NY, which has all but eliminated anything that propels a projectile if it looks remotely mean or scary and/or violates the Safe Act.
So I will procrastinate some more and research some more and hopefully make the right choice - fixed vs. adjustable magnification, scout or rifle now that you guys have given me some good information and suggestions. There are only a few quality scopes out there in the price range I am looking to spend (up to $350 plus the rings) so deciding between a Leatherwood, a Leopold or a Weaver may be the easiest choice.

I've had good luck with Hornady 225gr FTX LEVERevolution factory loads, using iron sights. I just added Barska 3-9x42 IR Sniper Scope to our CJ .45/.410. Like Suribachi I haven't had a chance to try it out (was 3 degrees F this morning), but it does *look* good. LOL.

If it doesn't work out on the CJ, I'll put it on my HiPoint carbine.

AMEN on the Hornady's,, same in mine. AMEN on the irons too, except, they can get bumped off, and need adjustment. +guns
