CZ 527 carbine Q's

Post by alphalimafoxtrot »

Hey y'all - good day from the guy back at school after 4-1/2 months off! +of

That's one way to open this thread.... +zzz

Seriously though, I know Mike and others have good experience with CZ's and other bolt guns in various calibers. Finally noticed the CZ 527 carbine in either 7.62x39 or 5.56 flavors. Of course, CZ offers many other caliber/rifle options, but these 2 interest me.

CZ USA's site says the 7.62x39 rifle is meant to digest steel case due to chamber/throat dimensions, I am guessing. Regardless, I'm interested. What say ye?

Thanks for any feedback guys!

7.62x39 has become one of my favorites cartridges. I've not owned the CZ 527, but know guys that have and they all hold it in high regard.

Thanks, RD!

I'm making a CZ 527 "saved search" for my GB page. I am also thinking 7.62x39 for this carbine, at least BEFORE I get one in 5.56 or .300BLK! +corn

Adam, I'm also a big fan of the CZ 7.62x39.

Haven't had any problems with steel cased ammo.

For hunting and good accuracy, much prefer the PRVI 123gr RN round nose brass ammo.
Also like 154 grain thumper rounds for hunting.

On GB, various versions of the 7.62x39 CZ 527 go for 550-650 I notice. Average seems 575. Any other places to look for cheaper?

You really need to decide on which model of the 527 you want as the price ranges of the 7.62x39 can vary better than a $100 just on the stock choice alone.

RD,

I realize the model I prefer now is the CZ 527 carbine. Here's the LuckyGunner segment about it I saved.

thanks for asking which one I was hunting down!

It would make a nice multi purpose do it all rifle with a reloading kit.
Be just like the 30-30, take deer with that rifle no problem.
Then load up small game loads with round ball and take rabbit, squirrel, etc.
7.62x39 is very versatile.

I have a mold and dies for this cartridge but the only eater I have is made to eat steel while full of water and sand so I have never contemplated a bolt gun. I bought the dies and mold because of an AR in X39 I built and then sold before I shot it.

What the 30-30 holds over the 7.62x39 is bullet weight and the ability to push that bullet with case capacity.

As a guy that has studied them both in detail, I'm very familiar with the characteristics of both cartridges. As a hunter that has taken a bunch of critters with them, I feel I understand the potential of both cartridges.

The 30-30 has 10-grains of H20 and that is an important difference when it comes to pushing a bullet downrange. The 7.62x39 has a very short case neck which will compromise case capacity when most bullets heavier than spec, 123-grains, are used. If you plan to reload jacketed bullets, you will be stuck with the 123-grain standard, especially as a hunting bullet.

I think the 7.62x39 is an inferior cast bullet cartridge. The short case neck and a spec chamber are very tough to address. The 30-30 Win is the standard for "Easy." I don't shoot cast bullet in either of my 7.62x39s any more. In my Mini-30 I have been using the Speer 123-grain #2213, which has been discontinued, and I will switch to the PPU 123-grain #B-210, which is almost identical to the Speer.

My Savage 10FCM Scout has a .308" groove and .300" bore so I shoot a different bullet, the Speer #2023 Spire Point. One consideration of using a non-specific 7.62x39 bullet for hunting is ensuring the velocity range of the bullet, especially downrange, is within the bullet's design velocity range. Velocity isn't an issue with the Savage as I load the cartridge to the same spec as that of the 308 Win version I also shoot, 65K PSI.

Another consideration for a compact, bolt action 30 caliber is the Savage 340. They are very reasonable and accurate. They can be plain Jane, but the E model's walnut stock can be beautiful with properly refinished.
