Buddy of mine decided to thin his herd a bit and offered to sell me one of these.
Decent shape, scratch or two, box & papers including the 1974 invoice for $145, spare grip a-la Ahrends, Tyler T grip, Right at $400 out the door counting the idiotic requirements to buy a lock and pay the idiot state for a background check.

Excellent deal.
I would have been on it in a heartbeat.
All steel internal parts, made to last forever.
Not made that way anymore.
It will only go up in value.

Are you fixin' to shoot +Ps? What's the barrel length? What style Ahrends? I've had an order in to Ahrends since mid-February, but I hear he's had family health issues, and don't expect anything for months.

You have to pay the state when you buy from a friend?

Wow!

my Mod36 is a 1963 vintage nickel plated. It's about 85% condition and a great shooter. I knew the former owner lady pretty well since about 1957 and was witness to her proudly waving it around the dispatch office of the fire/police station in 1978. Her first husband, a county constable, had just given it to her for "personal protection". Then flash forward to around 2012, after her death her then "husband" (also a good family friend) passed the little 36 on to me. It's been the absolute best "boot gun" I've ever owned, and the best shooting, most accurate snub I've ever owned. A friend loaned me some overly slick Hogue (I think) wood grips, but I'd really like to get the Tyler T grip and put the original S&W slabs back on.

WRT CA firearms requirements you would not believe the chicken crap they have come up with here.
Suffice it to say that the STATE requires you to pay them $25 for the Dealer's Record of Sale which is essentially the background check. Dealers are required to perform this service but may charge you $10 for their trouble. PLUS CA has a lock or safe affidavit requirement. The ATF has told my dealer they don't believe in safe affidavits and that every firearm (Including stripped receivers) MUST be accompanied by a firearm safety device (lock). CA approved cable locks generally cost around $10 and must be purchased from the dealer at the time of transfer OR you must provide a copy of a receipt for a lock dated within 30 days of the transfer OR an approved OEM lock must be included with the firearm at the time of sale. NOTE an approved lock that is NOT OEM must either have a current receipt or must be purchased. Possession of such a lock is not sufficient.

I am not intending to shoot +P ammunition out of the gun. I've been told by some former LEOs it should be capable of such but my understanding is that Smith did not authorize +P ammo in these little guns until produced on the magnum frame in 1996 and later. Barrel length is standard 1&7/8" (1.875").

I must retract my Ahrends statement. I WISH they were Ahrends but they appear to be Herretts.
I have several sets of Herrett grips that came on some Smiths I picked up and I'm not overly fond of them although some are nice. These are similar to Herrett's Detective pattern.
